KAMAT BENDS TO THE PRESSURE OF WOMEN’S ORGANISATION OVER DUM MARO DUM

PANJIM: Bowing to intense pressure from the women’s organisation, Goa government has sought Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s intervention over the controversy surrounding Rohan Sippy’s upcoming movie ‘Dum Maro Dum.’
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Thursday said that he has constituted a high level committee to watch the movie before its release on April 22.  “We have written to the Information & Broadcasting (I&B) ministry expressing concern over the movie, as it allegedly portrays Goa in a negative light. The committee led by I&B secretary Rajiv Verma will watch the film and give its opinion to the State,” Kamat said.
A report in this regard will be submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification, which will decide the fate of the movie.
The committee also comprises of Inspector General of Police Sundari Nanda, Goa State Commission for Women chairperson Ezilda Sapeco, activist Bina Naik and Chief Executive Officer of Entertainment Society of Goa Manoj Shrivastava.
The movie starring Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padakone and others revolves around six Indians who meet in Goa and how their lives change forever once they get involved with the drug mafia.
While the PIL demanding movie’s ban is being heard in the High Court, women’s organisation has already demanded to ban its release ‘whose raunchy trailers have already hit the small and big screen.’  The commission in its police complaint demanded to take action against the movie makers for its offensive portrayal about Goa.
Home Minister Ravi Naik said that the committee was formed on the backdrop of controversies including a police complaint.
In the letter to I&B minister Ambika Soni, the chief minister has said that the film’s trailers have raised apprehensions in the minds of Goan people that the film has highlighted Goa as a destination for only drugs and sex.
He has said in the letter that the ministry should impress upon the Central board of film certification to ensure that the state of Goa and people of Goa are not portrayed in a negative light and the sentiments of the Goan people are not hurt.
Notwithstanding the public opinion against Dum Maro Dum, Home Minister Ravi Naik today dodged the media question and instead said that he would watch the movie with chief secretary Sanjay Shrivastava.
“I will watch the movie along with the chief secretary once it is released,” Naik told reporters. He was however quick to add that he would see the movie once the committee certifies it through its recommendations to the Centre. He however declined to comment on whether he supports the movie ban or not. “I have not seen the movie trailers. I don’t know the issue,” he replied to a media question.
Earlier, soon after the conclusion of the national fire service day function held at Fire & Emergency Services department at St Inez, Naik was caught by the media whispering to the chief secretary saying, “Let’s go for the movie when it is released in theatres”. The chief secretary reacted with a smile giving his consent to the minister’s proposal.
