Traffic cop caught on cam accepting bribe

PANJIM, MARCH 15: Close on the heels of five traffic policemen being suspended for taking bribe, a sting operation conducted by HCN TV channel, has caught another traffic police constable accepting bribe from a traffic violator.
The constable Sagar Salgaokar, attached to the Panjim Traffic Cell, caught the person (name withheld), on Mandovi Bridge, talking on mobile while riding his two wheeler vehicle.
According to the Motor Vehicle Act, talking over the mobile while driving is an offence, which is punishable with a fine of Rs. 600.
Salgaokar, instead of issuing him a challan straightaway, told the person to pay Rs 300 as bribe or else he will have to pay Rs 600, as per the rules.
The constable took away his driving license and directed the motorcycle rider to meet him at a petrol pump in the city (near ferry wharf).
Once at the petrol pump, the traffic official took Rs 300 from the rider, and handed his license back to him, which was caught on camera by the HCN team.
When contacted Superintendent Traffic Arvind Gawas told Herald, “he has no knowledge of the incident neither did he see the footage on the channel.”
“I have asked my team to watch the channel and even if you have the footage please hand it over to me to take further action,” he told this reporter.
