MARGAO: Rupees 5000 is like pocket money to criminals and accused under the patronage of politicians like Digambar Kamat. The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Margao, Mr D Kerker convicted and ordered Manjunath K to pay a fine of ` 5000 in connection with an accident reported at Monte Dongor in 2009, in which two persons were injured.
According to the police, Mr Mahadev Gawas and Mr Shantaram Shinde were proceeding on a motorcycle when Manjunath who was driving a Maruti van knocked them down. Head constable, Mr Chandrakant Talaverneker of Margao police station had registered the offence and the case was charge-sheeted in the court. Assistant public prosecutor, Ms Sunita Gavde appeared on behalf of state.
In another case, the court convicted and ordered Cypriano Fernandes and Sebastiao Pimenta to pay a fine of ` 50 each, who were charged for organising bullfight. Colva police said that the incident was reported on April 13, 2007. Assistant public prosecutor, Ms Sunita Gavde represented state.
Meanwhile, an under trial, who was brought to the Margao court by escort cell, Vasco on Wednesday was admitted in Hospicio hospital, Margao after he complained of indisposition. It was learnt that the under trial had consumed some tablets, however no confirmation was received from the police.
Sources in Hospicio provided the name of the under trial as Agnelo Bedi alias Chikku. He was arrested by Agacaim police in a theft case and was lodged in Sada jail. When asked, Margao and Vasco police said that they were unaware about the incident however Hospicio sources confirmed that such a person is being treated in the hospital.
The criminals are a tool for the CMs next election campaign, intervention in criminal proceedings by politicians is a known factor. Which has seen criminals walk free from justice.
