PANJIM: The Panjim police have arrested an owner of a private firm for cheating the Indian government by misusing the telephonic connection. Ramanand Sharma, owner of ‘Pernial Solutions’ was arrested late on Tuesday night following a complaint filed by B R Bawaskar, Assistant Director, Department of Telecom, Maharashtra.
The accused, as per the complaint letter, clandestinely set up the operations of providing services of International Long Distance calls by-passing the authorised channels of International Long Distance Operations.
Police Inspector Ramesh Gaonkar said that the entire operations were found to be illegal. The firm was linked to a US based company ‘phoneweb.net’ that would outsource work to this local firm and data operators here would transcript the voice calls and upload it on the website.
The accused has however claimed innocence. Sharma said that he was not aware that such operations required license. “We were being supplied audio files from the US and our job was only data entry. We were ignorant that it requires licenses,” Sharma said. Police have registered an offence under Section 420 (cheating), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 and 20 of the Indian Telegraph Act.
