CANACONA: When women break barriers in a male bastion, they are normally lauded for their achievement. But in this case, there were no accolades and the woman in question ended up with an offence booked against her.
In an unusual development, Canacona Police late Tuesday night arrested a woman Matka bookie from Agonda on charges of accepting Matka bets.
Sources informed that this is perhaps the first instance in Canacona taluka where police swooped and arrested a woman Matka bookie.
It is, however, widely believed that a few women accept Matka bets elsewhere in the State.
According to Canacona Police sources, the woman was reportedly caught red-handed while accepting Matka bets in an establishment near her residence at Agonda.
Police further informed that cash of Rs 821 and other Matka booking materials used in the illegal trade were recovered from the accused. “Head Constable Sapna Rane from Canacona Police led the all women police raiding team apparently in a pre-planned move by Canacona Police,” sources informed.
When contacted, Canacona Police could not provide any further details of the arrest.
Our police are blind as they cannot see the matka betting in their presence. Matka is played all over Goa , especially in our major towns and cities and even the police play the matka. The poor woman must be booked as she failed to give the hafta to the police and matka king Ravi Naik.
