KARWARIS ATTRACTED TO POLEM TO PLAY MATKA GAMBLING

PANJIM: Many residents of Karwar in Karnataka have had a close attachment to Polem-Canacona for varied reasons. Cheaper availability of booze and fuel (petrol and diesel) has been a key factor for the attraction to Polem, but many Karwaris are now being drawn to the nearest village across the border for another reason.
People from Karwar have been found crossing the Karnataka border to Polem to indulge in Matka gambling activities.
It was learnt that three persons were detained by Karwar police on charges of carrying matka slips in their possession. Interrogations revealed that the three persons were playing bets at Polem.
When asked why these people travel all the way from Karwar to Polem, one police official who did not want to be identified said: “Since my transfer to Karwar about two years ago, I have applied brakes on matka gambling.”
“I learnt from close relatives and friends of habitual gamblers that they were visiting Polem regularly and losing lots of money.”
After learning about these happenings, the police official began to monitor frequent motorists on the CCTV, installed at the border check post, especially those travelling in the evening.
“After getting details of the vehicles, we began the drive to intercept them at Majali. We succeeded in nabbing over 60 gamblers, who had matka slips in their possession, since the past two months,” the police official said.
“We then learnt that the matka crazy betters began moving by KSRTC and Kadamba buses, after the drive on motorcycles and four wheelers. We have now placed policemen in plain clothes at Polem to keep a tab on matka gamblers. We want to ensure that no person from Karwar visits Polem for matka betting activities,” he said.
The official, however, insisted that he was in no position to stop matka activities in Polem. “Polem does not fall in my jurisdiction and it is the Goa government’s duty to curb the matka menace,” admitted the police official.

  1. How can Goa government curb the menance of matka as his own ministers like Ravi Naik, Francisco Silveira , Mummy, etc etc were dealing in matka bookies. The pig of varca wanted Karwar to be part of Goa, so they can play matka and vote for him. Why the Goa police want to stop karwaris when the matka bets are taken openly in Goa. The police must be not getting hafta from the karwaris.
