PANJIM: South Goa-based politician John Fernandes, accused of raping a Russian woman, was on Friday granted bail by a local court a year after he was arrested. All the while secretly Churchill Alemao and Mickky Pacheco had signed a pact to make sure that John does not get bail.
Pacheco and Churchill who just showed the public they are enemies were in fact found celebrating in outer districts like Karwar and the border of Goa hotels. They had secretly made a pact with each other to oppose the bail of John Fernandes inspite being related to the uneducated PWD minister Churchill Alemao.
A district and sessions court granted bail to Fernandes on four sureties of Rs 50,000 each. "He has been asked not to interfere with the investigation and has to appear before the investigating agencies as and when called," Fernandes' counsel Amit Palekar said.
The 25-year-old Russian, employed with a five-star resort, had accused Fernandes of spiking her drink at a beach shack in Colva village on December 1, 2009 before raping her in his car. The case initially registered with Colva police was later transferred to the Crime Branch after the Russian Consulate and the victim alleged tardy investigations.
Fernandes, who had unsuccessfully fought Goa legislative assembly election in 2006 on a Save Goa Front Party ticket, evaded arrest after the case was registered against him. He surrendered before the Goa Crime Branch on January 6, 2010 after the Supreme Court too refused to grant him anticipatory bail.
The case had taken different turns during the trial with another Russian girl, who was accompanying the victim on the fateful night, claimed that the complaint was false. Fernandes remained in judicial custody for almost a year as the victim went to Russia for a few months without deposing before the court. - NG
Having stayed in Russia for a while and going through their culture and standard of living a lot could be summed up on the Russian way of life.
ReplyDeleteThe case of John, may or may not be ( God Can Only Tell) a case of Rape as presented by the judiciary, but one thing for sure is this case had been sabotaged from the start. We have seen so many major, rather criminal cases being hushed up or put under the carpet . Why was this particular case so different. Criminals, Rapist, Drug dealers have all been given Liberty of freedom with no conviction but rather a clean sheet. How does one justify these cases as against the case of John. May be only a higher authority who is SUPREME may tell when judjement day is on hand.
Most of the actual rapists, killers in Goa are roaming scot free, most of them are appointed by their political masters as "trouble shooters" and hafta collectors, extortionists. What a wonder!
