PANJIM: Thousands of women in South Goa have warned the State government of blocking the mining traffic complaining against the frequent road blockages due to erring and arrogant trucks around Sanvordem. Ekvat Society, a conglomeration of 18 women organizations in the state, has given a deadline of 10 days to the State government to work out immediate solution for the mining traffic problems in the area.
The memorandum has been submitted to various government officials including Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava, Director Transport Arun Desai, police department and even local Dabal-Kirlapal village panchayat.
The Society Chairman Suvarna Tendulkar, through the memorandum has said that they will be forced to take on the streets and block the traffic, if their issues are not settled within the given time frame. “The residents of villages living in the stretch between Dabal to Capxem in South Goa’s Sanguem taluka are facing traffic blockages,” she said further.
“It has been observed that due to High Court order mining transport starts at 8 am to 1pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm. At 8 am mining trucks are allowed on the road the truck driver rush on the road making two parallel lines and also overtaking in between thereby resulting in the congestion,” the memorandum reads adding that again at 2 pm, similar rush is witnessed at the cost of lives of people who use the same road.
The memorandum also pointed that the truck drivers park their vehicles on the roadside, shrinking the width of the road for the usage. The society has lamented that daily bus transport, patients, students, marriages, and even funerals are affected.
