PONDA: Despite court orders banning movement of mining traffic during the night time, dozens of trucks carrying ore are seen moving in the Dharbandora, Usgao area specially in the wee hours of the morning, with authorities apparently turning a blind eye to the happenings.
According to Sudesh Naik, a resident of Usgao, the trucks travel during the wee hours every day from Dharbandora till the Usgao bridge and as the Bicholim police do not allow them to cross the bridge, at that time, the truck drivers wait until 8am and then cross the bridge.
"If the transportation is banned during the night, how do they reach Usgao bridge before sunrise?" questioned Naik. Alleging that about a hundred trucks queue up near the bridge, Naik said that it is very clear that ore transportation is being done during the night time.
Recalling that the high court has fixed timings for transportation of ore and issued directives in order to protect the people, Naik said that the truck operators are seen violating court directives in the area. Stating that he has written to several authorities, including chief minister Digambar Kamat, about the problem, Naik said, "However, until now nothing has been done in this regard."
Ponda traffic police inspector Salim Shaikh said that he was facing a scarcity of staff and as a result he could not appoint any of his personnel to control the traffic during the night time. "If any policeman is deputed during the night, he needs to relax during the day. However we cannot spare any policeman as we are already short staffed,'' Shaikh said.
