Although Valpoi town is progressing and lot of transformation are seen through the beautification project, nothing concrete has been done about the Valpoi stream that flows in the backyard of the Valpoi Municipal Council’s office.
Garbage Dump in the Backyard of VMC |
The condition of this stream is obliterating day by day as it is flooded with plastic, bottles, animal carcass, vegetable and fish remain which is added by Valpoi municipal council. It can be seen that VMC staff recklessly dumping the garbage in the steam which if preserve would have given an added attraction of natural water flow in Valpoi beautification project.
The residents pointed that the garbage produced by Valpoi town inadvertently finds its way into this stream causing pollution and irreversible damage to the environment.
It is found that everyday the VMC collects nearly 2 tonne of waste, including plastic, from its area and this garbage is dumped in their backyard as there is no garbage treatment plant in Valpoi. A lot of this garbage then gradually moves down into the stream, that later meets the Mhadei river. Neither Councillor’s are bothering about the hazards or the concern official take note of this act.
It is notice that the said stream is chocked with the plastic and the garbage and the water has been contaminated polluting the surrounding environment with the stench. This stream is also a source of water for farmers, who use its water for irrigating their fields for the Rabi crop at Massordem village. Meanwhile, the sanitary staff maintaining the helplessness said that they do not have a proper site for dumping garbage and so, left with no choice they are forced to dump it near the stream.
It may be observed that as the officials in the municipality have decided to ignore the laws and regulations on preserving the environment as many times in the evening the staffs are directed to burn the collected garbage which again pollute the environment and may prove dangerous to the shopkeepers and the residents. It is also noted that in the nearby vicinity a school and a hospital is also situated. The major suffer are the administrative staff who works in the office and just in their backyard this whole scenario takes place everyday.
Some prominent citizen of Valpoi has strongly oppose this action of polluting the natural flow of water and has urged the irrigation department to carry out the cleaning of stream before monsoon as this will prove highly dangerous to the residents who consume water from the Madei River.
This is the result of Indianisation of our Goa. Goa is doomed if we do not kick out the Indian ghanttis living among us. In the olden times Goa never used to become dirty like this. All the ghanttis do create this dirt and the Municipalities are thieves of the first class only fit to go collecting garbage.
