THEN AND NOW by Alberto Leitao, Varca

DURING SALAZAR'S dictatorial rule Goans could not open their mouth. But today in our so called largest democracy we can shout but truth is never out.
DURING SALAZAR'S rule there was peace and tranquility but today amongst Goans there is no unity and today's elected representatives and most of our bureaucrats have no character and lack integrity.
DURING SALAZAR’S rule even for a minor offence, an influential and powerful man was sent to jail, but today criminals, scam masters and swindlers of banks, at once get anticipatory bail.
DURING SALAZAR'S rule, laws were strict and common man could get justice, but today it's very difficult to get it even after one rests in peace.
DURING SALAZAR'S rule there were in villages mud roads but today our newly constructed roads are with potholes and PWD contractors remain unpunished because we have laws with loopholes.
DURING SALAZAR'S rule news was suppressed but today in our free Goa and other parts of India bold and honest journalists are harassed and oppressed.
DURING SALAZAR'S rule there were some highway robbers and smugglers who sneaked into Goa but after liberation they became freedom fighters.

  1. DR ANTONIO SALAZAR was a great man with great vision. He was 100 percent aware that Goans will suffer under INDIAN GHANTTI RULE so he allowed PORTUGUESE CITIZENSHIP TO GOANS. The Indian ghanttis can see how many Goans acquiring Portuguese Nationality for a better and decent life.

  2. Well put! We have gone backwards.....Our poor Goa is destroyed. Even our people don’t know right from wrong. Every day a temple or a church is robbed. It will never get better until we get independence. Then many Goans overseas will return and stabilize the situation in Goa. We could build a fantastic Goa, but I am afraid India will not let go. Goa was the jewel in the crown to India. The damn Freedole Farters gave her away....Traitors! We will never have peace.....sadly we have too many Goans who support India and cheered when India won the cricket match. I do not support Parkistan at all. But I didn't dance with joy when India won either. India stole our Goa with the help of traitors....our own people! We are our own worst enemies! More and more Ghantis are goint to entering Goa. Rich and poor from all over India are coming to Goa, Goans are selling Goa with their Real Estate, building and building, present minister Babush, biggest traitor and donkey of Goa sold so much of Our Goa..the b*****d! I hope his family never has any peace. Jennifer should be ashamed her son is a rapist and her husband a smuggler and a thief! All Goans should stop talking to this traitor family. We must fight for independence, it is the only thing that will save us.

  4. It is a shame that we have to come on the street time and again and again to press for our points. But many times we ourselves are to be blamed for this state of ours, we take money from the politians and blindly elect them. I have seen many learned goans not exercising their franchise, and later when a smugglers, rapists, corrupt politicians are elected then we start grumbling

  5. Alberto Leitao, : Whatever you have written in your article as true Many Goans wish those days had never ended. We can only hope and pray for a better Goa, We must try peaceful ways before resorting to other means. Goans existence is at risk.

After liberation many Ghantis have falsified themselves to become Goans, Many self proclaimed double standard freedom fighters have sent their children to Europe including Portugal for higher education. Yet the preach to Goans differently when we have asked for English Medium in our schools.

  8. How right you are. Yes WE have to blame ourselves for the mess we are in. WE let it happen for a few extra bucks. And rest assured, we will never learn from our mistakes, cos after all, to err is human. And WE will elect the same old guys again.
