PANJIM: The political situation in Goa is expected to take a spin with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar summoning Goa’s legislator Mickky Pacheco to Delhi on Monday. NCP sources stated that Pawar, who was in Dhaka for the inaugural match of ICC World Cup, has returned to Delhi. He has decided to take up the issue of Mickky’s induction on priority.
It has been almost two months that the matter of dropping two NCP ministers -Jose Philip D’Souza and Nilkant Halarnkar - has been hanging fire. Both NCP legislators have remained stubborn and even refused to attend NCP State executive committee meetings.
For Pacheco, the Delhi meeting is a ‘do or die’ situation as his reputation is at stake after he gave a deadline for his induction in the cabinet. The former tourism minister had issued a deadline of last Saturday for the party to induct him in the cabinet.
But his induction did not happen and instead NCP’s Goa unit President Surendra Sirsat issued a statement stating “Pacheco has been asked to hold back till next week.” Subsequently, NCP’s National General Secretary Prafulla Patel had also contacted Pacheco reassuring him that his demand would be met. Pacheco carries the support of majority of the State executive.
Sources stated that the State executive had even signed on their resignations from the party triggering en-masse revolt but the high command intervened last minutes to solve the crisis. Sources added that the decision on Pacheco’s induction is likely to have a rippling effect on Goa’s political situation in the run up for the elections.
A group led by Churchill Alemao has already upset Pacheco’s applecart last time and this time around too, they are expected to revolt. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, also has to avoid any crisis as he is all set to pass the State Budget during the oncoming session beginning from March 16.
