WHERE IS GOA GOING? OR IS IT ALREADY GONE? by Fr. Antonio Rodrigues

I am not referring to the territory of GOA which, it is said, Parasuram got it from the gods by getting the Ocean to recede from the Ghats up to the line where his arrow "bann" would fall, presently known as Bannaule (Port:Benaulim), I am referring not to the territory but to the culture which is known as the Goan Culture and which actually stands for Goa.
People from all over the world flock to Goa not so much for the sake of its land and shores as the agents and some writers portray on the papers but specially foreign people and outsiders flock to Goa rather because of its culture which makes Goa different and attractive in comparison to other parts of India.
There is warm sun shine and healthy air and white sand not only in Goa. For example Chennai has got one of the beautiful white sand beaches one would admire, the Marina Beach, but one cannot go for a stroll on it neither may one sit quietly anywhere on it. Why? Because of the culture of the people who do not keep it clean and usable. There is a beautiful white sand beach just outside Goa in Karwar with lots of tube lights to illumine it but no one may take a walk nor go and sit on it. Why? Because the culture of the people there does not allow it to be used for walks, games or leisure. At Benares or Varanasi where the River Ganga gives a vast turn, in the evening the sunset is really beautiful but one cannot go to the river bank for a stroll for one is unable to walk on the bank and why? Because the culture of the people there do not keep it clean for use.
This is a serious affair and we, all genuine Goans ought to reflect seriously on it, the precious Goan culture we have inherited. When we were born in Goa the land where we were born did not make much difference. What did make the difference is the culture we absorbed from our parents, in the midst of our families. When we were born our minds were blank, we did not know a thing, we could not recognize even our mother and father, but the way we perceived the touch that cared for us, and the one who cared for and fed us and embraced us lovingly, the sounds we heard, the ways of dealing with one another we imbibed the values which were imbued into us, formed the world view and the resulting culture of Goa which finally made us to be what we are in later life.
For any intelligent observer this Goan culture is based on the Ten Commandments of God which are encapsulated in the two Commandments of love of God above all things and love of neighbour as God wants it. This is the culture, really Goan culture which is so powerful and effective that it embraced and influenced all Goans whether Hindu, Muslim or Christian. This is the culture that made the difference between the behaviour of Goans, no matter what faith they belonged to, and the non Goans living elsewhere in India. This is the culture which made us trust one another even to keep our windows open though we had no grills at the time and the doors unlocked. This is the culture which made parents who had no male siblings in the house, entrust their delicate and beautiful daughters to the care of a chaperon who took them to functions, even to dances and brought them back safe and unmolested. And this is the Goan culture which became known throughout the world for example in San Paolo,Brazil, Brazilians pointed that difference to me referring to the Goans settled there, and this is the Goan culture which made or led the foreign mothers from highly developed Nations to entrust their precious daughters to goans without any qualms of conscience. But oh shame and misery I never dreamt of! to find these mothers instead of being thanked and honoured for making us aware of what our Goan culture really was and what it is turning out today, shame and misery I say and repeat it, to find among us individuals who instead of thanking them, judge and condemn them! to the point of saying publicly that a woman is 'after all only a chunk of flesh"! How could we go so low in our standards!
If we need even more evident proof of what our Goan Culture is, we can take our 'Manddo'. Manddo is both a song and dance. We all love it. But did we ever reflect on the way the dance of Manddo takes place? How respectfully the lady is invited by the gent to the floor. The way they dance without ever coming in close contact with one another. How the lady is dressed, with a long colourful dress known as the 'pano bajoo' Compare this way of dancing to both Indian dance and the western dance and one who is a serious, unbiased observer will readily acknowledge that there are some precious values behind or rather which led the Goan people to invent this type of dancing, an evident symbol of the typical Goan culture.
Today many of us who feel unbearable revulsion from our guts upwards and are revolting and feeling really disgusted by the way our typical culture is being ruined and how Goa is being disgraced in the eyes of the whole world, instead of burying our heads in the sand or instead of trying to run away from the miserable situation, we got to get together, we are bound to gather our wits and enforce regional parties formed of genuine Goans who care, barring all others though Goans and opulent but who do not care for our culture. It is hard for me to say, but yes, fact cannot be denied that all this misery has been spawning during the last few decades when the National Parties, have been ruling Goa. Time has come to foster our own regional ones. The National Parties which have been ruling Goa for some decades now, have only promoted one way or another the decadence of our culture for apparently such Parties rule Goa from outside ignoring what Pandit Nehru had said that our Goan identity was to be preserved. Are we to close our eyes and ears when for example, the law about the Casinos is being openly flaunted: aren't these to be off shore? Are these now off shore? Instead of enforcing the law, a dock has been built to keep Casinos very near the shore. What a shame! So many Villages of Goa are being plundered by those in power, taking bribes to allow mega-projects despite genuine villagers' objections. For allowing mega-projects bribes are taken but there are no bribes to improve the infrastructure so nothing is done about improving the infrastructure for there is no one to give bribe there! What a shame! The paddy fields which are going to be most needed today specially due to the universal economic meltdown and the resulting in un- employment are not cared for. Surely just as in foreign lands, many of our educated individuals wearing their hats and boots can use a tractor and make those fields yield plenty of precious food which is becoming scarce and costly. Lawyers are being bought. Those who stand and protest the wrongs, these are being prosecuted. What a travesty of justice. All injustice is being covered up, Justice being compromised, use of drugs and free sex being promoted all because there is an inflow of hard cash. Vote-Banks are fostered. By shouting out that in Politics there are no permanent friends and foes loyalty goes unrewarded and is replaced with disloyalty. In this miserable situation I appeal to all genuine Goans who care to come forward and promote honest and straight individuals who will not bend to the allure of corruption, and reinforce the Regional Parties. Providentially we got two Regional Parties now, the Su-Raj mostly in the North and the UGDP mostly in the South and thus get ourselves ready to heal the bleeding wounds of the honest Goans and generate the force needed to bring about the needed change. Here is where gifted man Dr.Oscar Rebello with the powerful GBA movement he spearheaded can and should discover, encourage the right individuals, genuine and dedicated Goans, men and women of integrity, who will definitely bring about this change.

Very well said, Fr. Rodrigues. It is our culture that makes Goa what it is. Those who come to Goa, do so because of our culture, more than because of the white sands and scenic beauty. This culture has embraced and influenced all Goans, be they Hindu, Muslim or Christian.
The rest of India, that was under British domination, does not have the same culture. And now, with Goa being ruled by National parties who rely on migrants and others such for their vote banks, the culture of those people is infiltrating here and ruining our typical culture. The precious values that our forefathers taught us and imbibed us with, are being lost.
Today, who cares for what Mahatma Gandhi or Pandit Nehru said? Today's politicians are made of different stuff, with their own priorities and new sets of values.
You are right, Father, when you say that the improvement of infrastructure does not bring any "personal income". But widening of national highways apparently does.
I have written before about keeping windows and doors unlocked, about the so-called "off-shore" casinos, and about the plunder by those in power.
Your suggestion for reinforcement of regional parties is good. However, only a person like Dr Oscar Rebelo may, perhaps, be able to galvanize the honest and straight individuals, genuine and dedicated Goans, men and women of integrity, from within and outside the regional parties, to come together on a common platform to fight the next elections and stay together thereafter, whether they win or lose.

  2. Dear Rev. Fr. Antonio Rodrigues. Every word and sentenced you have framed is interpreted by you very precisely. Although 2 days have elapsed, I see only 1 commentator for appreciating your work. I wonder why people did not like the reality you have expressed. The trust, faith, fondness and friendliness that prevailed in the olden days is never to be abided in the present days. Gone are days when every neighbourhood was the friendliest to one another and the care they entrusted among themselves even to entrust to them daughters of any age. But now even a three old girl child gets raped and molested.

But I would totally disagree with your views about Dr. Rebello being spearheading the NDA movements. Yes initially he did support the NDA but later on due to personal interest and reasons best known to him, he has back-stabbed his support for this cause and I don’t feel he is worth for our struggle for freedom.

  3. @franco, I agree with you as this is the article that needs to be read, as the good Father has come out with the bitter truth about Goa. To Father's question I can say that Yes Father Goa has gone on one fourth is remaining and that too will go soon thanks to the dirty crook like Churchill Alemao, Digambar Kamat, Dayanand Narvekar. Father I for one am fully with you and with Niz Goenkar in our fight against these crooks all of them they are all same sharing the loot or the bounty they collect selling off our motherland Goa.

I agree with franco there should have been more comments on this topic as it deals with the plight of our mother Goa. Some commentators are busy fighting among themselves for an upper hand and have ignored this topic. Wake up Goans and read this article. This article by Fr. Antonio is an eye opener of those whose eyes are closed and blindly elect the crooks to the assembly again and agains.

  5. Rev. Father Rodrigues, you have truly expressed Goans' sentiments. Although many feel the same way, no one had come with a proper description. Like you say, Goans are respected and liked all over the world for their culture more than being Goans. Inn my younger days, when I used to play in a Band, I got the opportunity to travel all over India to play in 5 Star hotels on contract basis and always felt sick of the behavior of the people or of the place that I visited. They don't understand what is decency or how to communicate politely or otherwise with people. Our tradition itself brings us in the limelight amongst others and that is why when one say I am a Goan, we are saluted by people from any part of the world. If you travel to any part of the world, you will be surprised how well everyone knows Goa because of its culture. We would think that Goa is a small place and no one would know it outside India. Why do tourists flock too Goa and not to other places of India??? Goa is going down now not because of the influx on outsiders, but it is because of our own Goan politicians whose greed for monwy will never be satisfied and they would do anything for money to seel our beloved Goa to anyone.

Rev Fr. Antonio Rodrigues; Around the world Goans are well known for their honesty , hospitality and unique culture, adapted from the Portuguese . In our own motherland it does not seem that way. The Corrupt ministers and all those under them have desecrated the name of Goa . We Goans should stand up in unity and fight against the corrupt politicians for the integrity motherland.

  7. Goa has hardcore corrupt ministers and their crumb eaters who have destroyed the culture and beauty of Goa. it took only 50 years to destroy Goa beyond recognition under Indian Rule. Can we regain back what we have lost or do we salvage what we have left? Thanks to the Indian occupation Goa is being destructed at a faster pace and is very alarming. Can we unite to save what is left or are we fit to drink and fight amongst ourselves? the answer lies within all the Goans.

  8. Be it Hindu, Christian or Muslim Goa has a culture loved by all around the world. Foreign and Indian tourists come to Goa for its worm and friendly people. Advantage has been taken by Goan Ministers under the Indian RAJ to cash in on our honesty. Crime and corruption is at the highest level and out of control. Unless we vote the current regime out of power Goa will be destructed forever and Goans will have lost their dignity. Let us do something before it's too late or we die doing nothing

  9. Welcome to the bolg Rev. Fr Antonio. The Goa of today is not the same Goa of yesteryears. Today's Goa is run by the Mafia, the Mafia that rules Goa. The Mafia are druglords, criminals and illiterate bunch of people who determines what the common man of Goa should have or not. The education department is run by a illiterate goon who was also responsible in breaking the same house of law and order - Panjim Police Station. Least said about he police force and the police officers of Goa is best. The Police are now involved in drugs, murders and prostitution. The higher ranks of the police force are drug sellers. The Home Ministers son is alleged to be involved in selling drugs. What a shame, the present Goa is in shambles. The Choranchem Ghor atop Porvorim hillock should be declared as The House of Corrupt Criminals.

  10. Prevention is better than cure, so what advise we have to give our youngsters as they have future in Goa. First of all ,we have to advise them not to commit the mistakes of their parents who acted as crumb eaters of the politicians. we have to aware them as how these politicians loots and plunders the poor people, and they should not vote them again and again.

  11. I apologize for not taking the time to thank Fr Rodrigues for putting into words so beautifully 'what makes us nizgoekars'. I have always believed that we Goans were environmentalists long, long before the environmental movement!! It is in our blood...unfortunately Greed has blinded some of us. That is why we need to get our people that have strayed from the flock to return. We must seek them out like the Good Shepard as they are lost and need to return back. At times I cannot write as it pains me to read each and every day the terrible situation in Goa. We even had one of our own murdered in cold blood at the hands of the brutal and corrupt police. Drugs have infected our culture all the way to the top. Thank you Rev. Father for speaking out. When one looks that the struggles all through the world we have had ministers of the Church that have come forward and marched for justice. When Blacks in the US marched for civil rights, many white ministers marched along side with them and were beaten. There is a terrible situation in Goa now....no-one is safe, not even our religious places...the one place that we should feel free is no more. These are very telling signs of a society in decay. How long can we allow this to happen? Drugs, crime, Corruption, looting of land....cheating....you name it, it is taking it's toll on our people. Sadly, I had believed that the Gods must have been happy when they created Goa, 'cause we were blessed with such a paradise. But it is a paradise no more. For so many hundreds of years we treated her with care and dignity, until now...concrete jungles everyway…. destruction of the ecosystem….. Our poor Goans unable to buy land to keep our culture going...we are systematically being REMOVED from our ONE and ONLY HOMELAND!!!!...Why don't we wake up??.....we will soon be a people with no place to call home. HOMELESS!!! Future generations will lament of a place that once was called Goa....Is this what we want for our future? What else more do we need to wake us up to a revolution?...It pains me to write more......
