SIRSAIM VILLAGERS STOP MINING TRUCK FROM PLYING

MAPUSA: Tension prevailed throughout the day, on Tuesday, at Sirsaim as locals agitated over the large scale plying of mining trucks took to the streets and staged a rasta roko blocking the mining trucks from plying.
Around 10 trucks were stopped near the Sirsaim petrol pump, on Tuesday morning, resulting in traffic jam along the road.
According to villagers of Sirsaim and Tivim, these mining trucks bringing ore from Maharashtra cause large scale traffic jams and dust pollution at Sirsaim and Tivim and as there has been no action forthcoming from the authorities, the villagers were forced to take this step.
On getting this information, Deputy Collector, Mr Redkar, mamlatdar Mr G Shankwalkar, Mapusa police inspector, Mr Rajeshkumar along with other police officials rushed to the site to pacify the agitators. Mr Redkar tried to convince the villagers to withdraw the rasta roko and arrive at an amicable settlement through discussions, which the villagers opposed saying that discussions served no purpose.
The Deputy Collector informed the villagers that he alone could not take the required action as even other authorities had to act.  The rasta roko was withdrawn towards afternoon, but again the villagers resorted to it in the evening wherein again mining trucks were stopped.
The police personnel stationed at Sirsaim had a tough time controlling the situation. The rasta roko resorted to by the villagers in the evening was again withdrawn after police intervention.  Meanwhile, truck owners later in the evening held an emergency meeting and opposed politicians who were trying to make this a political issue.
The truck owners along with their staff said that this was a matter of their livelihood and threatened to block the entire traffic along the road if the villagers were firm in blocking the movement of trucks. They even challenged those behind this protest to make alternate arrangement for their livelihood if they had to abandon this iron ore carrying business. Some incidents of deflating of truck tyres were also witnessed.
