PONDA: That grandparents often go to any length for their grandchildren was proved true, albeit tragically, by Pundalik Vithal Neverkar on Tuesday evening. The 75-year-old Karwar resident had travelled to Mardol, Ponda, along with his four-member family, to witness the Rathotsava (chariot festival) at the Mahalasa temple.
As the grandiose procession got under way with devotees pulling the gigantic chariot, Vithal Krishnand Nevrekar, all of five, ran in front of the chariot.
Realising that his grandson was in the way of the chariot's wheels, Pundalik ran to his grandson and pushed him out of the way to rescue him from being run over by the chariot. In the process, however, he fell before the chariot's wheels and was crushed. The incident happened as many other locals were witnessing the rathotsava.
Ponda PSI Nikhil Palekar said Pundalik's left leg and right hand were crushed. And though he was rushed to the Goa medical college and hospital, Bambolim, Pundalik succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday afternoon.
GMC doctors who conducted the postmortem attributed the cause of death to multiple fractures and heavybleeding, police said. A case of unnatural death under section 174 of CrPC has been registered by Ponda police. Police said the body was handed over to the family following the postmortem.
