GOVT. URGED TO INQUIRE INTO EXCESSIVE DAMAGE TO PROPERTY DUE TO SAND EXTRACTION

PANJIM: A retired police official has urged Goa government to inquire into the excessive damage caused to property and environment in Keri due to large-scale sand mining on the river mouth and adjoining stretches.
In a letter to chief minister Digambar Kamat, the former assistant police inspector who opted for voluntary retirement from service in late nineties has said that he would hold a public meeting and commence a hunger strike in Keri on March 6.  "I am not saying who is guilty or punish anybody who is," Narayan Sopte said, adding that he only wants implementation of assurances given by the government regarding unregulated sand mining in the area.
Sopte said that Kamat had assured Mandrem MLA Laxmikant Parsekar on the floor of Goa assembly in June 2010 that action would be initiated regarding the MLA's complaint about illegal mining.
Though the mines department had initiated the process in September 2010 to inquire into the matter and sought a compliance report, nothing much has been done to curb the activity, he said. A deadline of a fortnight was set to file the report last year.   The Keri-Tiracol panchayat had also set a deadline to the government to fulfill the assurance given by Kamat, he pointed out. - TNN
