MAPUCA: A newborn girl was found murdered in Mapuca market on Friday night. Mapuca police said that the body of the newborn, her umbilical cord still attached, was wrapped in a cloth placed inside a plastic bag and was kept in a basket. The infant was killed by tying a rubber band around her neck.
On Friday, at around 11.30 p.m. some vendors who were closing for the day noticed the infant’s body in a basket and immediately informed the police constables who were patrolling in the market at that time.
Constable, Mr Dayanand Salgaonkar then contacted Mapuca PI, Mr Rajeshkumar, who alongwith DySP, Mr Sammy Tavares, PSI, Mr Nitin Halarnkar and other police constables rushed to the scene and after conducting panchanama sent the body for post mortem.
Police officials were seen in the market till 6 a.m. on Saturday trying to verify the movements of people and get some clues. A dog squad was also pressed into service. An offence of murder has been registered against an unknown woman under section 302 and under section 201 for destruction of evidence. PI, Mr Rajeshkumar is investigating the case.
