11 YEARS LATER PRINCESS REMOVAL IN SIGHT

PANJIM: With almost all the required permissions for removal of the River Princess having been acquired and the management of Arihant Ship Breakers having given the bank guarantee of `10 crore, the stage has been set for signing contract with the successful bidder for removal of the vessel that has been lying grounded off Candolim beach for nearly 11 years.
According to the sources in the tourism department the contract could be signed as early as Monday and the work on cutting the ship could begin within a few days. The sources, however, said that the central government is yet to issue the notification declaring the area at Britona, earmarked for keeping the scrap of the vessel, as customs area.
The sources further said that the signing of contract could go ahead even without the central government notification but cutting of the vessel and transportation of the scrap would have to be delayed till the notification is issued.
The tourism department has in the meanwhile told the Arihant management to move man, machinery and equipment to the area around the ship and start barricading the area before beginning the actual work. The successful bidder has also been told to carry out the dredging work around the vessel, wherever necessary, the sources added. The tourism department sources further said that the contract on behalf of the state government would be signed between the director or the secretary of tourism and the authorised signatory of the Arihant Ship Breakers.

Decade long saga of River Princess continues Special
Candolim - In Goa, they say everything moves at a snail’s pace- susegad, susegad (slow pace). How true when you consider the fact that successive state governments and Tourism Director’s have failed to remove M V River Princess.
That ship ran aground off the Candolim-Sinquerim coast, almost 10 years ago.
After fighting many legal battles with the owner of the ship and after deliberating over several options over the years, the State government will now float new tenders to cut the ship into pieces.

River princess When my second child (daughter) was born my son said why don't we name his sister River Princess, being only seven With shock we looked into his eyes. When we asked him why? he said that River Princess is called the beauty of the North Goa and attracts a lot of people. I have decided to take my son to show him the River Princess and will be taking him every year until it has finally been removed. He may have to carry me to see it when I get old. We have given the daughter a different name and explained to our son about River Princess.
