AIR TICKET SCAM IN POLICE DEPT: HOME MINISTER NAIVE ABOUT IT

PANJIM: The Home Minister, Mr Ravi Naik on Wednesday admitted that the police team led by the then PI, Mr Sudesh Narvekar, which had gone to Delhi last year, to arrest the director of Utsav Safety Systems, Ravi Somani, was provided air tickets by the then Inspector General of Police, Mr K D Singh.
"The details of payment and the name of the buyer of the air tickets, and the agency that booked the tickets are not available on record," the Home Minister said, adding that no investigation as regards the sponsor of the tickets has been done.
It may be recalled that the Goa police had arrested Somani in New Delhi, with respect to a complaint as regards providing unauthorised High Security Registration Plates (HSRP), without any authorisation from the concerned authority, thereby cheating public in general.
Observing that the police officials of the rank of PI are allowed to travel in train, when on duty, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar alleged that the tickets were actually bought by Shinmit Utsch, the rival company of Utsav Safety Systems. "And the police had taken a supari (contract) from Shinmit Utsch to arrest Somani," he stated, adding that subsequently, the FIR lodged against Somani was quashed by the High Court, and the PI was ordered to personally pay the cost quantified at ` 15,000, thus exposing the police department.
Speaking further, Mr Parrikar questioned the involvement of the IGP in the case, stating that police officer of the rank of either DySP or SP should have handled the case. "Incidentally, the SP who was on duty at that time had no idea about this incident," he told the House, noting that if such things continue in police department, in no time Goa would be another Mexico – (NT).
