PANJIM: The crime branch has written to the immigration office in Mumbai asking them not to allow the eight Indonesian girls, who have alleged that they were brought to India with forged documents and bogus appointment orders and forced to work in a spa in the state, to leave the country pending inquiry.
Confirming this, a crime branch official said, "The allegations are of a serious nature and we want to record the girls' detailed statements and corroborate it with evidence that we have collected." Meanwhile, a crime branch team reached Mumbai on Wednesday to record the statements of the girls. Police will also be taking samples of their handwriting and signature to check if the same matches with those on the residential permits, police sources said.
Sources said that the police wrote to the Mumbai immigration department after they learnt that some of the residential permits, which the girls alleged that the owners of the saloon had kept with them, was returned back to the consul. "Once the girls have the residential permits, then they can easily leave the country. When a person who is on a visa which is valid for more than six months leaves the country, then at the immigration counter they ask for the residential permit from the state they were residing in. Once it is received, the permit is sent to the FRO in Goa and the foreigner can leave the country," said police sources.
Indonesian vice-consul in Mumbai, Sasanti Nordewati, had complained to the police that 23 Indonesian girls were hired by the owner of Snip Salons and Spas in March 2010. She further alleged that the eight girls who were working in Calangute and Bandra, managed to escape and come to the consulate on November 12 for help. (TNN)
