VALPOI: The Children Park situated near the Valpoi police station, continues to lie in shambles, like it has done for nearly two years, with no authority interested in taking up repairs to bring back the past glory of the place.
This recreational spot, which was an area of attraction to many children, who used to gather here in the evening, is now covered with thick overgrowth of bushes and wild plants. It is a horrifying sight as the park once was full of flowers and the laughter of children.
It may be recalled that this park was opened with much fanfare in 1992, and thereafter was frequented by children residing in the vicinity. Senior citizens too used to come here for evening walks and to spend a little time with their friends and grandchildren.
Sadly, 17 years down the line there has been a complete transformation of the much loved park. Today it is desolate and eerie and has wild shrubs and overgrowth where children used to play. The park presently contains the broken and rusty remains of recreational items, those which the scrap collectors have not been able to haul away.
The present appearance of the park is a grim testimony to the promises of the government, which is promising a lot of good things for the children. Various petitions have been made to the civic authorities to repair the park and bring it to its former glory, however, all the requests have fallen on deaf ears. All that the Valpoi Municipal Council has been saying for the last many years is, “This year the park will be ready and will be up-graded in the scope of beautification work.”
In the meantime, the park keeps going from bad to worse. It is also noticed that the municipal authority has constructed a vermin-composting unit inside the park and people are puzzled whether the place is meant for children to play or for treating garbage.
The civic chief, Mr Umesh Gulelkar, when contacted, assured to bring back the lost glory of the park by renovating the same with better amenities and a new aesthetic look under the Valpoi beautification project and the consultant of GSIDC informed that the planning of the renovation of the park is in its final phase.
None of these politicians give a damn about children’s play areas. But the same politicians will be ready to support mega housing projects on the same children’s land, as there is money to be made. That is the part and parcel of political life in Goa imported from the rest of India with the so called Liberation.
ReplyDeletePeople of Valpoi and all Goans, make some noise otherwise politicians will sell the land to some Ghantis. Let us be like Cairo and Tunisia..
