MIGRANT CRIMINALS WERE HIDING IN GOA FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS! Law evaders from Manipur were hiding in Goa for the last four years. Acting on a tip-off, two teams comprising of Goa police and Manipur police arrested two Manipur-based wanted criminals from Ponda and Anjuna, late on Monday night.
While, it is learnt that the accused are responsible for blowing up a bridge in Manipur, Goa police stated they are oblivious of the criminal background of the offenders. “We don’t know whether the accused-duo is responsible for the bridge explosion… We only know that they are booked for offenses at Wongoi police station in Imphal (Manipur)”, replied the officer. The suspected Naxalities have been residing and employed in Goa for 10 and four years, respectively. While, Kaboba stayed with his wife and children at a rented place in Ponda where he worked at Kundaim Industrial Estate, Khamba was employed in a hotel at Arpora.
Deshpande, however, clarified that the duo is not Naxalities but are associated with United National Liberation Front of Manipur, which is a banned institution. The State police are on the job to find out whether the alleged accused had filled tenant verification forms and whether their credentials were thoroughly checked before and during their stay period here. Meanwhile, the Manipur police today moved Ponda Judicial Magistrate First Class for transit remand to reassign the accused men to Manipur prison. Police sources informed that till the JMFC order, the alleged criminals are lodged in the Ponda lock-up.
The ad-hoc committee on Home chaired by Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar said that police needed to keep a vigil over labourers and immigrants, employed in the state’s burgeoning mining and tourism sectors. The committee report was tabled on the floor of the House of the Legislative Assembly, last week. The recommendation of setting up a special cell followed two months after a leader of Orissa based fringe Maoist group Shambu Beck was arrested in Goa. Bhartiya Janata Party in May had alleged the arrests of maoist militants proved Goa was a ‘hideout haven’ for anti-social elements, which was refuted by the Home Minister Ravi Naik
According to sources, the accused arrested are the members of banned outfits from Manipur. One of the two accused was an employee with a private bank at Ponda. JMFC Ponda granted 10 days transit remand to the duo.
According to reports, the accused were in Goa since the last four years. Manipur Police will take the accused to Manipur. However, Ponda police were tight-lipped and refused to provide any details in the case.
The pair has been identified as Naorem Monimohan alias Kaboba and Sayeed Rashidulla alias Khamba, both of whom were residing in Goa for several years. “Manipur police contacted us following which we formed a team and assisted them to net the accused who are wanted for attempt to murder and Prevention of Unlawful Activities of Prevention Act in Manipur. They were arrested from their temporary residential places”, Police spokesperson Superintendent of Police (Special Branch) Atmaram Deshpande told reporters.
