VANXIM VILLAGERS TO SEEK GOVERNOR'S INTERVENTION

Villagers of Vanxim have decided to hand over a memorandum to the Governor, Dr S S Sidhu to raise objections to the "forced" displacement of villagers of Ilhas de Capao even as they on Sunday organised a massive public meeting to condemn the sale of land in Vanxim to a luxury tourism developer from Bangalore.

The residents have sought Governor’s intervention to stop the ongoing attempt being made by vested interests to dispossess all the residents of the island. They have stated that attempts are being made to destroy the village which is highly eco-sensitive, to make way for a large real estate and tourism project.
It may be recalled that over the past four years, various agencies were involved in selling out of the eco-fragile island. Earlier today various speakers voiced their opinion prominent among them being Mr Diago Rodrigues from Tirakhol in an attempt to sensitise the people about the laws that protect people, agriculture and houses and tenanted land which cannot be sold.
Further he said the revenue department of Goa is all out to rob the land from Goans and hand it over to the land sharks.
Mr Sabestian Rodrigues of GOAMAP spoke about the involved people who fraudulently cracked deals to sell the land. Mr Dilip Hedge of Goenche Xettkarancho Ekvott highlighted the need to protect the agricultural land especially for the future generation in view of food security. Other speakers also spoke on the occasion.
The island of Capao, an emerald in the crown of Tiswadi, lies in the River Mandovi to the north of Divar island and to the south of Narve, Bicholim taluka in a highly eco-sensitive zone. There are 78 houses in the village, with about 55 families residing on the island. A large population of Vanxemkars are living elsewhere on account of economic reasons.
The villagers also plan seeking the intervention of Dr Sidhu to direct the state government to restore the damaged bunds protecting their paddy fields and assist the villagers to re-start cultivation on lands not cultivated for the past few years besides ensuring that the island of Vanxim is maintained as a green zone and that new non-agricultural activities are not allowed on the island and to set aside all the false cases filed against the agricultural tenants of the village.

  1. They have looted everything in Goa and now they are trying to loot what very little is left of our Goans and for the Goans. Where are the freedom fighters sleeping now? Where is the rogue Naguesh Karmali? Well done people of Vanxim do not give an inch of your land to anybody

  2. I remember buying rice paddy seeds from Divar when i was young. What our successive governments have done to our beloved Goa? As the hafta has already been paid these guys will do nothing to protect the Goans. It is the collective voice of the Goans on the streets, that we need. There is no proper sanitation and other infrastructure for the current concrete jungles and shanty towns we have. And these 40 idiots don't give a dam
