ELECTIONS AND MONEY POWER by Adv. Aires Rodrigues, Ribandar

The Election Commission officials in Tamil Nadu must be applauded by one and all and commended for seizing a whopping Rs. 3.82 million in a day’s raid on money that was stacked to buy votes in the current Assembly elections there. This action holds a ray of hope if the authorities act firmly to curb the use of money in elections.
At the recently held elections for the Corporation of City of Panjim the election officials stood as paralysed spectators, if not conniving with the open distribution of cash. At least in the Ribandar wards, the authorities were informed about the malpractice, but they chose to turn a nelson’s eye. Unfortunately, God also got pushed to be where the money was with the local Parish Priest Fr. Alcantra Rodrigues openly using the church to campaign for the forces of money and muscle.
So the final outcome was a free flow of money as a consideration for votes. The unspent amount appears to have been intercepted on April 3rd at the Bombay International airport on its way to Dubai. As to how the money bags were not intercepted at Dabolim airport itself is a mystery. The rest is history.

Drug money, Looted money and Bribe money from Goa has found its way out into international banks and investment cooperation abroad. In Goa Election officials are dumb founded by receiving Goan blood money, there will never be fair elections in Goa unless Goans take to the streets.
