DUM MARO DUM by Willie Severes, Majorda (Dubai)

The movie "Dum Maro Dum" to be screened across the country from 22nd April has drawn strong opposition from some section of the house, and the public.  Bollywood has always depicted goans wrongly in Hindi movies.
They usually show Goa as an epitome of drunkenness, where men are drunkards and violent (Josh), and Goan females are as bold and ultra-liberal (Khamoshi).A kissing scene in front of the altar in a church, with a priest in presence was also shown (Kambakth Ishq), but nothing was said and done about it.
Our politicians and the susegadness of the people of Goa, has just allowed problems such as nudism, free love and flesh trade, major drug networks etc to proliferate. And, our corrupt politicians insist that our once beloved Goa is still "clean".
Trailers of this film show that, this film is all about reality, issues that are affecting the state today. The government should have objected to shooting of the film in Goa first of all, now that they fear that they’ll be exposed by what is shown in this film.

  1. Willie, why should we be hypocrites? Is it only because it will be seen on the screen repeatedly? What about the live scenes those happened in Goa involving high scale criminals cum politicians? Keeling of Scarlett Keeling, rape of the German girl, the Miramar Sex Scandal, the mysterious death of Nadia Torrado to name a few. Are these not acts by our own Goans? How many of us came on the streets objecting to what has happened or still happening? Our Goans passed it off as another episode and they will ignore this film too. The worst publicity that Goa earned was when Mickey Pacheco as Tourism Minsiter admitted that Goa is the Rape Capital of India or the World itself. What else do we need more to tarnish the image of Goa?

Why blame Bollywood? Check Goa Government tourism advertisements. What do they depict?
Check our Ministers. What example do they give? Need someone elaborate? Why do you think foreign tourists have dwindled? And more of Indian tourist and Eastern block ones coming?
But Goans see mostly Indian tourists getting drunk and getting into fights or getting drowned.

  5. Well said Dalia! It is time our people take a good look in the mirror and stop fooling themselves. The very fact that we elect dirty corrupt MLAs is testament to the kind of people we are. I am tired of hearing excuses as to why people vote the way they do, at some stage we must accept that we are responsible for our actions. I grew up with a Goan community in Africa and I can tell you without exception we were a community that was the most honest people. I believe in a community of almost 100,000 strong at one time only one person was found guilty of embezzlement. If you equate those numbers to Goa, it would amount to 13 people. However, almost every second person in Goa is corrupt. That is why they pick people like themselves to represent them as politicians. And we did have very poor Goans in Africa too, so stop making excuses for the Goans in Goa. I always thought it proud that we were an honest people. That is what made us stand out. In Africa the Indians were considered to be the dirty corrupt people. The Europeans and locals would never hire them as they considered so dishonest and uncouth. It appears that 50 years has made the Goans in Goa ‘Indian’ in every sense of the word. And when you look at the Freedole Farters they are very proud to have these ‘Indian’ traits. Our UNeducated Minister put a Gujarati as Mayor of Panjim, watch the whole state of Gujarat move into Goa. For Goans that live overseas they will agree with me 100% on this. The Gujaratis are very clannish. In America, their latest conquest, one family bought a motel 15 years ago and now all the motels are owned by Gujaratis that even Hollywood has to use them in their movies for a motel scene. They are now coming to Goa to take over, thanks to a STUPID Goan Minister of Education. But here again, the people of Goa want this. They pick people like themselves – STUPID! No use crying afterwards and making excuses. We are responsible for our actions!!! We are raping Goa, lets not pretend that we ‘love’ Goa, when we don’t! If we did, we would never be in the position we are now! ….Sorry, no offence to you Willie.

Menino I doubt any offense will be taken as long as the comments are from the heart.
On the subject of the article Goa has become the laughing stalk of the international tourism board. Rape murder and extortion are on the daily menu, not forgetting Drug dealing politicians families, foreign and Indian prostitutes.

  9. Seeing everyone’s comments here I do agree in your point of views, at the same time I do support in what bab Willie had to say, myself as a Goan and being abroad most of the time and also having travelled all over India, almost 99% of the People’s opinion about Goa was based on what they saw in the Movies (Bollywood) given the live scenes in Goa, well yes they are also a matter of concern at the same time, that’s why I said that everyone’s point here is a Valid Point, but don’t rule out entirely what Willie had to say, cause I am of the same Opinion as its based on my own life facts when I interacted with people all over India and what they had to say when I told them I was a Goan! In the end they became my enemies cause I always landed up telling them that their Brother and Fathers were the ones Drunk on the Streets and Beaches and not Goans and that it’s their Mothers and Sisters in Baina and not Goan Girls that were available for Flesh Trade! Most of the time I almost got beaten up for standing for Goa! Viva Goa… I’ll do it over and over again to save my Pride and save the Pride of my people my Fellow Goans.
