PANJIM: The Zero Hour of the state legislative assembly, on Thursday, witnessed the government being cornered as regards its failure to provide alternate place for the Pernem market. The Pernem MLA, Mr Dayanand Sopte mentioned that weekly market is held in Pernem every Thursday, from 6.30 a.m to 8.30 p.m along the main road, and hence the traffic has to be diverted on particular day of the week.
“The situation gathers more seriousness as important government offices like offices of the deputy Collector and mamlatdar, RTO office, fire station, police station and so on are situated along this road,” the Pernem MLA informed, adding that the Pernem Municipal Council subsequently passed a resolution to shift the market to another place. “Accordingly, the market was shifted at another venue today, but some influential person pressurised the deputy Collector to re-locate the market in its original place,” he added, noting that this person needs to be identified.
The Aldona MLA, Mr Dayanand Narvekar also came out against such an act, which caused distress to public.
The Minister for Urban Development, Mr Joaquim Alemao replying to the Zero Hour mention said that he had not given any such direction to the deputy Collector. “Anyway, I will inquire into the matter, and furthermore, visit the Pernem village next week for investigation,” he added, pointing out that there is a need to shift the Pernem market, and estimates are prepared for the new market.
