MOTHER TONGUE MEDIUM IS A MUST IN THE EDUCATION OF GOA: NAGUESH CARMALI

PANJIM: Konkani writer and protagonist, Mr Naguesh Carmali, expressing his views on the controversy over medium of instruction said, "I am dead against making English as the medium of instruction at elementary level, especially, in the state of Goa, where we already have an education policy in place.’’
Speaking to this reporter, Mr Carmali said that fault lies in the education system and not in studying in a mother tongue. Stating that Konkani lovers in Goa are still alive and kicking, he said, "we will not surrender to the anti-nationalist forces, but will fight till the end."
"We will welcome English language as one subject at the elementary level, but not the whole of education in English, and one subject in Konkani," he added.
Further, stating that today’s teachers are not dedicated to the cause of education, Mr Carmali expressed the need to appoint dedicated and learned teachers, who should not be political appointees as this profession demands complete devotion.
Citing his own example, he said that although he studied in Marathi, he can very well converse in Portuguese and English and that there was no problem of any kind, adding that, this was achieved due to good teachers in those days.
"Making a child learn in English medium is like torturing him or her. India is not an ordinary country. It is rich in culture, traditions, languages and we should be proud of our language," he pointed out.
While the convenor of Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch, Ms Shashikala Kakodkar who is a STAUNCH SUPPORTER OF MARATHI AND AGAINST KONKANI, said that opposing education in mother tongue at the primary level and imposing a foreign language is not a sign of true nationalism and added that she is totally opposed to it.
"We are not against any language, but by making English the medium of instruction at the elementary level, love for nation, love for its cultural ethos and love for its language would be eliminated from the heart of children,’’ she felt.
The former editor of Sunaprant, Mr Uday Bhembre, believes that English would be a better option for the present generation and one subject should be made compulsory in mother tongue — either Konkani or Marathi, Uday Bhembre is here forgetting that Goan Mother tongue is KONKANI and not Marathi for him to suggest EITHER OR from Std I to SSCE.
"This would bring in progress, prosperity and at the same time protect the culture and mother tongue also," Mr Bhembre added.
He also hoped that this would put to rest the controversy over the medium of instruction.
The former director education, Ms Suman Pednekar, opined that education in mother tongue is a must for Goans, but teaching English as one subject should also be encouraged as the students have to switch over to English as the medium of instruction as they move ahead in their studies.
Ms Pednekar also proposed that while the children are imparted education in the mother tongue, English should be taught by the qualified teachers.
Mr Pundalik Naik, a Konkani writer and Sahitya Academy Award winner, said that there is no need to change the education policy as it has been formulated long ago and the grants should be extended to only those schools and institutions, wherein medium of instructions at the primary level is mother tongue.
Mr Naik further said that "we have invited representatives from 500 schools to discuss the issue and only after holding the discussions we would chalk out the future course of action."

  2. The fault lies not with anything but with the mentalities of petty criminal people from the Portuguese era who are also known as Freedole Eaters, Freedom Farters and igniters of communual tensions in Goa.

  3. Can these guys Carmali, Naik define what is meant by mother tongue? Just as making a child learn in English medium is like torturing him or her, isn't it a crime to force Konkani/Marathi down a child's throat whose mother tongue is not either of these? Goa has many families whose mother tongue is neither Konkani nor Marathi. If you say that Konkani is the official language of Goa and hence a Goan's mother tongue is Konkani then this amounts to politicising the issue and is not in the true spirit of imparting elementary education in the language that the child really can understand. All these Carmalis, Kakodkars and the so called educationists have gone to dogs!

  6. Hey Naguesh..I agree with you and all those who support Konkani as mother tongue in elementary school and there are many supporting and shouting their throats out.. It was good to notice and nobody is pointing or indicating the REAL purpose. THE PURPOSE IS TO MAKE KONKANI IS TO MAKE KONKANI A MEDIUM OF ADMINISTRATION IN GOA GOVERMENT OFFICES AND THAT GOANS SHOULD QUALIFY OUTRIGHT FOR THOSE JOBS AND IT WILL RETAIN OUR ERODING GOAN IDENTITY.

this is sole purpose and objective and other general purposes are to maintain Goan cultural balance, lifestyle and Goan heritage. NOBODY IS ADDRESSING THIS OBJECTIVE AND THE GOVERMENT IS NOT TAKEN TO TASK TO TAKE THIS DECISION WITH REGARD TO THIS OBJECTIVE. Many guys like Naguesh are revealing ignorance in bliss.......

IF THE VERY PURPOSE IN NOT MET or LOST THEN WE BETTER MAKE ENGLISH AS MEDUIM OF INSTRUCTION AND KONKANI FOR CULTURE AND HERITAGE we can have mandatory and compulsory % oin marks for promotion of students .. if the objectives are not met I am for ENGLISH, and Shuold be Konkani in the kitchen for house maids and only to negotiate fish price and issue ticket on KTC and frt Tiarist for some funny songs and to fire some bad words in the local Bar.

Just shut your mouth D..ck head Karmali, who are you to decide what education my child need?. It is each parents choice to decide upon. You have no right to talk you were caught as thief during Portuguese and was jailed you dog!. If you think so that child's education should be in Mother tongue then I bet you and your facist squaling pigs to request the Govt. to make Konkani compulsary even in private un-aided school. We are not against Konkani but speak in line with child's future and progress.

  8. Naguesh Karmali was a petty criminal who was arrested by the Portuguese for robbing. After liberation, taking advantage of the Maharastrian bureucracy he declared himself a freedom fighter. Since then every year he is begging for higher and higher pensions and benefits for his kith n kin from the govt.

This dog should have been castrated and let out of jail by the portuguese. Who the hell is this idiot to impose his views on Goans. It's time for him to kick the bucket and so he should not get unnecessary worked up, instead enjoy the "BIKH" (alms) that goans give to his family for robbing during the portuguese era.

  9. Carmali chora better if you can keep your moutn shut. You are not the educationist to tell us what is right or wrong. You may be Indian nationlist only because you get IZMOL from us. If it wasn't for the Poetuguese you would be selling pan on the roadside at the most.

  10. Shasikala kakodkar is a Maharastrian GHANTTIN and has NO RIGHT to dictate terms to Goans. Asking for the right to choose ones's medium of education is not anti-national by any stretch of imagination. What is anti-national is SMUGGLING activities that her father indulged in. For that matter does she know who her father's father was??? May be an anti-national.

This old hag still harbours dreams of meging GOA with maharashtra and is nothing but maharashtrian agent who needs to be ignored.

  11. Goa is supposed to be a democratic State SO Why do these fools get involved in a child's education, it is the duty of the parents to chose the right education for children. Parents are the Guardians of underage children. Neither Marathi or Konkani is the official primary language of Goa, so what language is classed as the Mother tongue? If Konkani is the mother tongue why does Marathi hold equal status? Let Goans decide their future rather than the False Freedom Fighters Dictating Goans.

The sooner we get rid of this government the better, Carmali is just a another freeloader of Goan taxpayers money. Goa is Goans and it is up to the Goans to decide their future. Why do we have to live under a dictatorship? Goans let us all unite and stand up for our rights.

Mr Nagesh Carmali says he is against introduction of English as the medium of instruction at elementary level, specially in the State of Goa, where we already have an education policy in place. Shouldn't the policy change with the times? Because the Portuguese were doing bad things, should these bad things be continued?

One would say that the "anti-nationalist forces" are those who do not want the State and the Country to progress, to move with the times, and Goans should "fight to the end" against such forces.
