CRIME STATISTICS OF GOA: THEFTS ON RISE

PANJIM: While thefts showed an increase in the year 2010, other crime declined. Police detection, however, continued to remain poor. A total of 1,034 theft cases were registered in the state last year. Of these, 346 were detected. In 2009, some 859 cases were registered and police detected 239 of these.
Detection of theft cases was higher in 2008, when of the 601 cases registered, 221 were detected. Just 33% of theft cases registered last year were detected. This is, however, higher than the detection rate of 27% in 2009. The conviction rate in theft cases too was poor. While 15 were convicted of theft last year, 25 were acquitted.
The statistics showed similar trends in past years. In 2009 there were 37 acquittals and 12 convictions and in 2008, acquittals were 58 and convictions 26. In contrast, incidents of kidnapping, rape and murder declined in 2010. While 2010 saw 36 cases of rape, 2009 had witnessed 48, and 2008 had 30 such cases registered in the state. Of rapes, almost all, with the exception of seven in the last three years were detected. In 2008 there were 36 kidnappings in the state. The figure fell to 32 in 2009 and to 25 in 2010. As far as detection of kidnappings is concerned, police were able to detect 25 cases in 2008, 22 in 2009 and 18 in 2010.
Murders too were less and while there were 53 murder cases registered in Goa in 2009, last year there were 35. Of these 35 cases, 27 were detected and of 2009's 53 cases, 47 were detected. The conviction rate has, however, remained extremely low, with just 1 rape accused convicted in 2010. No person accused of kidnapping or murder was convicted in 2010. In contrast, three persons accused of rape and one of kidnapping were acquitted.

  1. For a small state the percentage of Crime is the highest in Goa next to Delhi. Acquittal of criminals are the highest too. The invasion of Goa by the Indians is responsible for the criminal mess we in. Goan Government has no desire to fight crime, but have chosen to be part of the criminal organisations.
