DRIVE AGAINST OVERLOADING TRUCKS RE-STARTS

PANJIM: Mining companies operating in South Goa could face charges of contempt of court for overloading of mining trucks with the Transport Department booking 51 cases related to overloading in Quepem and Rivona, on Wednesday.
The director of transport, Mr Arun Desai, said the department will list out the mining companies from the trucks which have been pounded and report them to the High Court for contempt of court directions against overloading.
Mr Desai also said that the department will be reporting the matter to the mining department as there are stringent provisions against overloading and added that all the mining companies have been given sufficient time and have been intimated against overloading of the vehicles.
He said that the department re-started the drive against overloading after a few days of break as the truck associations had sought time to remove the planks from their vehicles.
The Transport Director said the department booked 51 cases for violations and have pounded 46 trucks for loading beyond the 10.5-tonne capacity.
He said that the department had to seek police reinforcement in Rivona and Quepem due to the resistance from the truck drivers and has sought two permanent teams of police reinforcement for the next few days to enforce the drive against overloading.
He further said the joint drive against overloading was held by the additional director of transport, Quepem and ADT, enforcement, South. Meanwhile, Mr Desai has accused some mining companies of playing bluff and giving false information to the department on the cargo being transported out of the mine heads.
He said the trucks cannot get overloaded without being overloaded by the mining companies and the department is determined to put an end to this and is exploring methods to tackle the problem.
