I don't usually write political commentary but two incidents which transpired this past week have prompted me to do so. On 15th March, I woke up early to check the result of Panjim's CCP elections. Imagine my disgust in opening the Herald website to see a Babush Monseratte, chugging alcohol straight from the bottle.
Maybe, rather naively, embedded in my mind's eye is the image of a politician who conducts himself with dignity, decorum and sobriety; he displays humility and concedes that he is after all a servant of the people. He does not go around acting like default nobility, downing alcohol in open view as if he had just successfully robbed a bank in a Bonnie-n-Clyde drive-by shootout.
Some weeks ago, I wrote a column on how revolutions are useless unless the people revolting have a sincere desire and ability to bring about change. The time to create revolutions, in a democracy, is at the ballot box. Who are the people who attend rallies and who are people going to the ballot box? Are they two different sets of people? Is it possible that one goes to a rally to protest corruption and then goes to the ballot box to vote in corruption? (Thankfully at least the indignity of the CCP election results has been mildly mitigated by the fact that Babush's hold is considerably diminished.) There are no short term fixes in this game; no great apocalyptic endings and a brand new beginning. There is only a continuous flow of history, in which we must struggle to reform with the firm belief that reformation alone is the only revolution worth pursuing.
The second reason why my hackles are up this week, is a video of Minister for Environment, Aleixo Sequeira, actually supporting illegal sand-mining in Goa (for the video clip, click here ). What gives, Mr. Sequeira? I have never heard of a Minister for Environment advocating the destruction of the environment. How can he justify an ecological travesty? Has he conducted a study to understand the ecological impact of sand-mining? Has he undertaken a study on its impact on marine life, the reduction of dune cover, the effects of the encroaching water? His justification that there is no alternative source of sand to feed the ever-growing hunger pangs of the real-estate industry is morally repugnant and reprehensible.
Just how much destruction of Goa are we going to tolerate for the sake of the real-estate industry? Has there been one piece of solid legislation or action from Goan politicians, which has actually protected the Goan and his land from blatant CRZ violations; from the abuse of cheap migrant labour which destroys the wage structure of indigenous labour and impoverishes migrant labour to a sufferance beyond human dignity; from the unchecked malaria that breeds at construction sites; from mega-project monstrosities which destroy the fabric of the Goan village, a fabric which for centuries has adjudicated its own delicate organism of morality and social responsibility; from the deprivations of water and electricity as a result of overburdening the infrastructure; from the annihilation of green cover and destruction of bio-diversity; from the untenable fluctuation in the real-estate price market making housing out of the reach for the common man in Goa; from the dumping of construction detrui in paddy fields?
I wonder if Mr. Sequeira has ever taken a ride at 6pm from his house through the small villages around his magnificent mansion. In the evening you can see the bonfires of cancer being lit with the tons of plastic garbage for which there is no other form of disposal. Burning plastic can release any number of toxins into the environment including one that was used to produce Agent Orange. The same chemical Americans used to destroy forests in Vietnam; exposure to which left the population maimed and deformed. This is what we are releasing into our environment every day. At the very least, as Minister for Environment, Mr. Sequeira could have developed a comprehensive policy about plastic disposal, instead of lecturing us on the needs of the real-estate industry.
To transliterate a Konkani saying, whose land is it Mr. Sequeira? Your father's land? Because that is exactly what the politicians of Goa think it is.
Selma , I hope your article filters down politicians brains. Politicians of Goa are thick skinned and have no feelings for the Goan masses. People of Goa have become so poor that they will even cast their vote to anybody who can feed them chicken for a day. Rest of the five years they are left to lick the bones which they have left . When you talk of Environment they will say "MAKA KITEAK PODLAM"
ReplyDeleteWell said Selma. Not only you even we were disgusted to read Herald (which is a pro politicians and a puppet of them) that day. Our Goans will never realise their folly. The crumb eaters of the politicians! What is left of Goa. 70% of Goa is occupied by Army and Navy of occupying forces, India and soon the Navy will start its project to drive out Goans from their houses as planned by Sudhir Pillai the Naval Animal a blady malbari dog and a relation of K, Menon the old animal who invaded Goa (IOG)
ReplyDeleteThank you for putting into words so eloquently how we all feel. It is time we all speak out if we are to see change in OUR Goa……………... I enjoy all reading your articles, as they are always refreshing. I know some day future generations are going to be thankful to you for compiling the firsthand history of our people through out the world.
ReplyDeleteBabush has won the CCP elections through money power. How many times have we seen this? Goans will not realise what they are losing in the bargain. After the results Babush admitted that his panel had made mistakes during its previous tenure. But, what change would he make now to Panjim?
ReplyDeleteWell presented assessment of the cruel politicians of Goa. I agree cent percent with the view of Selma tha unless the people motivate themselves for a change, nothing will happen. The people don't just have to attend meetings and show solidarity but actually practice it through the given channel to throw these looters out. We all have a chance to bring in a change and that is through secret ballot but if we do not exercise it, do not expect miracles to happen and change the scene overnight. Crumb eaters has added to the sufferings of the people.
ReplyDeleteAlex Sequeira is another arrogant, useless, liar and selfish individual. He cares about himself, his won interests and nothing else. He is good in gambling in Casinos around the World, to dump money in the slot machines that is acquired illegally by robbing Goans.
Another brilliant article from Selma Carvalho. It sums what most Goans think.
ReplyDeleteAs for Mr Sequeira also known Bamon Sequirrell, after 6pm, he will be available at Goa`s Casinos, drinking smoking and gambling. So he is unlikely to see the "little fires" lit to dispose off garbage.
On a bad day at the Casino, and having gambled Crores of rupees, he might be seen in the company of Whores,& prostitutes or gone to one of the new Massage Parlours that flourish in Goa these days. This is the lifestyle of Gamblers.
He most likely returns back home very late at night, when all the fires have extinguished themselves.
In the morning he is more pre-occupied with his gambling addiction and plans for his next big gambling soiree.
Considering he is an MLA, he should lead by example. But that is unlikely at this late and chronic stage of his life.
At the forthcoming elections,He will have a fight on his hand for the Nuvem Constituency. His opponent will be another thug and gambler Mickky Pacheco.
The voters of Nuvem can expect to receive a bounty of Goodies and empty promises, from these 2 Goan scumbags.
What the people of Nuvem will never ever get, after receiving goodies for their votes, is development.
What these 2 scumbags will do, however, is" DEVELOP " their Bank Accounts and Gambling skills.
They will also DEVELOP better methods of scams to increase their Bank Balances.
As for that Rapist Father thug Monseratte, another comment is required just for him.
Appreciable thinking of Selma to open the eyes of our Goenkar who need to be pushed and woken up from deep slumber. Each and every word contains meaning and hope that people read this. Especially those who accept money and vote and sell the freedom of every other honest citizen.

ReplyDeleteWhy were people celebrating after MonsterRat won?, not for the joy that he has won, but for the joy that after he has won, he pays his slaves generously. People in his team receives presents only when he wins.
