SURESH AMONKAR LAUNCHES PROFESSOR AVE CLETO AFONSO’S KONKANI-ITALIAN DICTIONARY

PANJIM: A Konkani-Italian dictionary by professor Ave Cleto Afonso-the first ever attempt to link the two languages-was launched by Padma Shri Suresh Amonkar on Friday.  Noted litterateur Amonkar, speaking at its launch at a city hotel said, "In today's increasingly shrinking world, bilingual dictionaries will have a significant role to play to bring about meaningful dialogue between people of the world."
Immediately after the formal release of the dictionary, tributes were paid to the late Ravindra Kelekar by garlanding his portrait and singing of 'Pantti' by Bakibab Borkar by Shakuntala Bharne. A poem by Manohar Sardessai in Konkani, together with its Italian translation was also read on the occasion.
Afonso said, "Beneath the distinct phonetics, syntax and semantics of each of them, the literature of these two languages have something enticing which is common to them."
