CAN ANYONE THROW LIGHT ON THE AGITATION AGAINST, HAVING ENGLISH AS THE MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION, BESIDE KONKANI? by Ashley J. Fernandes, Margao

Goans may well be wondering, as to the reasons behind certain well known as lesser known individuals frowning at the plea by thosuands of parents to have English as the " Medium of instruction. Its straight and simple:
1) These individuals spread over various political parties and across the state, have got used to exploiting and cheating people, as all legal documentation is in English.
2) They have robbed Goans of their land and further want to exploit them by depriving them of their command over a "universally spoken and accepted language, English, cause a command over the language would close all money making avenues by these cheats.
3) These individuals are also very closely linked to the management of various private institutions, responsible for looting Goans with the excuse of proviing their children education in English. Mind you , many of these institutions have cheated not just the parents by over charging them , but also the teachers by under paying them. Including English as the medium of instruction in Govt. aided schools, would in all certainity lessen the demand of private schools and would decrease the pcoket money for corrupt politicians linked to these pseudo-educationists.
4) They are more interested in roping in "Marathi" which is not the mother tongue of Goans, rather than "Konkani" .
5) In short, they feel that educating the masses would lead to them being exposed in public, in a similar manner in which they try exposing one another during assembly sessions.
Fellow Goans, it's not that these individuals are interested in our children, they are first and foremost interested in filling their own pockets, even at the cost of slling the last acre of their motherland “Goa". We and are children do not at all fit in their agenda and that's the truth.

Thanks to our corrupt politicians we Goans are second class citizens in our own State. Had our politicians been work for the benefit of Goans we would have been a prosperous state. It is the Goan electorate to be blamed for repeatedly electing the same corrupt uneducated persons to power. Also the congress party would rather have illiterates as their candidates in Go, as it is easier to manoeuvre them.

  2. Cowmuth will shortly declare Madrasas as the only true educational institutions of Goa and they do not have the issues of MoI. He is about to ask all Goans to make use of these Madrasas and attain spirituality with physical techniques in using instruments of self defence. This can beat Baba Ramdev out of the town. What a noble idea, isn"t it?

  3. Well said Ashely, I am being practical here.......Its a pity at times to see our youth struggle for Vocabulary when communicating in international territories ..Given a firm foundation in an internationally recognized language which is English , it would have definitely made a greater impact on our youth. Our politicians who are purely " SELF INTERESTED" are the main cause for this fiasco, where by parents today have to come out on the streets to fight for their rights. Its a pity that our illiterate holders of power fail to understand that the Indian market cannot and will not generate enough jobs to cater to our growing number of youth and our eyes have to be set on the outside market to fulfill job requirements. Its a pity that the very illiterates holders of power fail to see that once outside Indian territory English is the major language of communication. Its a pity to see these very Holders of power, ensured their wards went to the best private medium English schools and yet at the same time have IMPOSED Konkani on the other children. There is a lot that needs to be explained by them here. For those in power, an admission is just a phone call away, but for the other parents getting their ward admitted to a English medium school is a nightmare, not forgetting the large volume of donation that has to be given to get this admission. The ultimate finger points to these very politicians under whose blessings these educational institutions have blossomed, and today may be referred to as financial trust rather then educational institutions. The parents have no other choice but to revolt against the current educational policy which is totally flawed due to the arrogance of these policy makers. Its the career of the child that's at stake here.. The Politicians have nothing to loose, they have looted enough to buy /impart their wards the highest qualification available in the universe using the ill gotten wealth from the tax payer.

According to Fr Mousinho de Ataide, the then Archbishop of Goa had decided that the medium of instruction in Diocesan schools should be Konkani. More than twenty five years have passed since then. Aren't we supposed to progress? Hasn't the Church itself progressed, from the time of Pope Pius XII to the present day? Say in just 50 years out of its 2000 years history?

We read today that the Archdiocesan Board of Education supports the demand by parents - that English should also be permitted as medium of instruction, besides Konkani/Marathi/Regional language, according to the parents' choice; and that Marathi/Konkani should continue as one of the compulsory subjects throughout Elementary Education.

The Board has clarified that parents are NOT demanding for English medium in ALL primary schools, but that there is a demand for grants from the government to English medium schools. I have also emphasised on this many times.

It is only a small group of people who are behind the movement to have the basic education in mother tongue. That basic education is to be given at home, by the parents and elders. That should be in the mother tongue or in any language in which the child feels comfortable. School education is imparted in the schools. This should be in the language chosen by the parents.

And why are government grants restricted according to the medium of instruction?
