SIGNBOARDS AND SIGNPOSTS by John M Vaz, Aldona

Goa’s state language is Konkani. Marathi does not come in the picture; it is the state language of Maharashtra. Which state has two official state languages? Goa is a tourist destination, and all signboards should be only in English, which is an international language known to all.
The so-called freedom fighters who demand this have no other work to do but to change names and criticise others. There is so much more they have to work for. Corruption is rampant. Essential commodity prices are sky-rocketing out of control. Can’t they work for these people’s issues? They are after some silly things, leaving the more important things which they must attend to.
Wake up freedom fighters. Politicians are making hay while the sun shines and making us their slaves. Show them for what you have fought for. Is this the ideal Goa you worked for? Please be realistic. There is much real work to do.

To John Vaz: I fully agree with you.
In my personal experince nearly all Goans now are highly Educated (except a few MLA`s).
Everytime I come down to Goa, nearly everyone speaks to me in English. For some, usually the much older folk, they cannot speak English fully...but they do understand a lot of it and I fully understand them and also appreciate the effort they make.

  2. Marathi is not our mother tongue. Our mother tongue is Konkani and the sign boards have to be in Roman script Konkani with proper official spellings. Not the GHANTI spellings. Now is the time Goa Hit Rakhan Manch has to strike and they have the support of Niz Goenkar all the way.

  3. Goa is a state where everyone is free to design their own number plates for their vehicles. Slowly, it is seen that a lot of vehicles are put up with such fancy number plates written in Marathi or Devnagiri script, even traffic police will not be able to read them. Similarly, the Goa Government should stop encouraging tourists to come to Goa as none of the foreign tourists will be able to read Marathi.
Cheap politics and politicians, this is a trend to kill the Goan culture by embracing Marathi. Hell with the Marathi promoters, hell with the non-functional government of Cowmuth.

  4. My Dear John,

Please understand that the so called freedom fighters are a sham. They say that they have given us freedom from the portugese, but their main motive was and still is to unite us with maharashtra and that is the freedom they are fighting for to unite us with maharashtra and that is what explains the fact that we are still having a issue with official language with 2 languages featuring for GOA. Our so called ministers the great stalwarts likes Chorchill, Mickey mouse, tallo(Sardine), Randy and son(Ranes)etc speak the only language that they know and that is the language of money, corruption in the name of doing good to the so called public which is supporting them to be happy with what they are.
