GOA POLICE REGISTERS A CASE AGAINST MLA AGNELO FERNANDES FOR INSTIGATING

PANJIM: Calangute police registered a case against local MLA Agnelo Fernandes for instigating persons to form an unlawful assembly and to restrain a traditional fisherman, after two groups fought over rights to use a jetty at Sinquerim.
At 2.30pm on Wednesday, traditional fisherman Reginald Silveira arrived at Calangute police station with an injured nose and lodged a complaint stating that Fernandes instigated his bother Lawrence and nine others to form an unlawful assembly to restrain Silveira and threaten him with dire consequences, besides causing simple injury to him.
Silveira complained that acting at Agnelo's instigation, his supporters restrained him and two other traditional fishermen and delivered blows on his nose with their fists causing injuries. The medical examination confirmed that Silveira sustained a simple injury. Police registered a case against the MLA, his brother and supporters.
Later, Lawrence lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Silveira and two others restrained him and others, threatened them with dire consequences and assaulted a lady supporter of the MLA. Acting on this, police registered a case against Silveira, Augustinho Lobo and Lagario Lopes.
Police said there was an argument between traditional fishermen and water sports operators supported by the local MLA, after a fisheries department official installed a board at Sinqueirm jetty stating that the jetty is to be used by traditional fishermen.
Police added that the water sports operators led by Lawrence, who were also using the jetty, arrived at the spot and started arguing. After the fisheries department official left, the water sports operators removed the board, which led to an altercation between the two groups.
Meanwhile Agnelo denied the charge. He claimed that trouble started after Silveira had an altercation with a fisherwoman. "Some people came running to Candolim panchayat after which my brother, who is a panch, rushed to the site," the MLA said. (TNN)
