PANJIM: Goa PWD Minister Churchil Alemao has kicked off a row in Karnataka after he reportedly made a statement at a public function in Karwar to fellow Konkanis that the Konkani speaking areas in Karwar, Karnataka, be acceded to Goa.
Reacting sharply to this, Janashakthi Vedike president Madhav Naik on Friday filed a complaint against Churchill Alemao for provoking the Konkani speaking people of Karwar against Kannadigas.
In a written complaint to Uttara Kannada SP Raman Gupta, Naik alleged that Alemao made a provocative speech against the Karnataka state government by making false allegations that the state government had not done any developmental works in Konkani majority areas of Karnataka.
The complaint further says that Alemao asked the people to agitate against the Karnataka government and separate Karwar and other Konkani speaking areas from Karnataka.
Alemao on Wednesday had attended a programme organized by Gadinadu Nagarika Vedike at Sadashivagad near Karwar and had asked for the support of Konkani speaking people of Karwar and surrounding areas to merge the area with Goa.
He had alleged that successive governments in Karnataka had neglected Karwar and said that compared to Goa, there is little development in Karwar. He had further said that he had been visiting Karwar for the last 30 years and it had not changed since then. Alemao said he had never criticized the Karnataka government for lack of development in the Konkani-speaking areas of Uttara Kannada, especially Karwar.
"It was the most memorable welcome I received at the function held at Sadashivagad. I was stopped at five places there and the Konkani people gave me a rousing welcome in their traditional manner for supporting their cause," Alemao said on Friday.
Alemao said he only supported the demand of the locals that they want to be part of Goa. "Impressed by their Konkani culture, I appreciated the work being done by them to keep Konkani alive," Alemao said. (TNN)

ReplyDeleteAs soon as this topic getts hotter and hotter in Karnataka, I am sure Churchill wit come out stating he has been "MISUNDERSTOOD".
ReplyDeleteI am sure his daughter, who has been given the distinction for having the "Biggest Lips" in Goa and being an Advocate too and Social work when it is convinient, could have advised him correctly.
I am awaiting for a "defection" from his claims and stance ,soon.
Chorchill must have seen the grass is green on the other side, with most goans comming out against his looting (development) plans. He should shift there. We would be better without him
