In the year 1989,I passed my SSC through Our Lady of Health high school,Cuncolim and it was the best English medium Education system Goa had in which Konkani was not even a mandatory subject. At the time of PDF government headed by Dr Luis Proto Barbosa, the Education system at primarily level was changed to Konkani medium, the parents did raise their voice against the same but the voice was so low that it was not heard by the concerned authorities.
This change in Education medium at the primary level gave rise to a number of Primary English medium schools and presently most of these English medium schools are selling the admissions for a huge sum of money. Is this not corruption to sell Admissions in the name of donations? Hardly any children of the brain behind this change in medium of Education studied/studing in the Konkani medium school.
Now the Education department has issued Circulars that they intend to change the Education medium to Konkani till 8th standard. Is it a planned racket to give rise to more English medium private schools? The parents and the teachers should raise their voice against this foolish planned act by the illiterate politicians controlling Education in Goa.
With the present grading system the promotion from one standard to another turned out to be very easy and soon they might come with another policy to promote students without conducting Exams. This changing Education system is lowering our standard in the field of Education and what better we can expect when Education bosses are highly illiterate in Goa.
A teacher can’t use a stick to correct a student in the school, during last year a mother filed a Police complaint against a teacher from Cuncolim parish school for pinching her son and this is one of the reason why condoms, cigarette buds etc are been found on schools premises in recent times. During our school days the teachers were not just using sticks and wooden dusters to correct us but we were even made to kneel down for minutes in hot sun and we were afraid of reporting such matters to our parents because we were liable for home punishment for getting punished in the schools. The present day’s rules will only take our children towards wrong paths and that is what we are witnessing presently.
People power works and the Government can’t force their ugly Education policies on our Children.
The current medium of education which has been forced upon the poor child is pathetic. The Ministers who fought for Konkani as the main language fooled the people to believe that by making Konkani as the "OFFICIO" language it would benefit the child. If this was the case as made to believe by our politicians, then why did they ensure their children were all educated in the top English Medium schools? This is a clear cut exposure to show how scruplous and self interested our ministers are.
ReplyDeleteIts a pity to see parents standing in serpent lines waiting in the early hours from midnight just to collect a admission form, its a pity even after the forms are collected that admission is not a guarantee.
The current situation of having a few private English medium school has compounded the situation to a point that now, Donations are the norm of the day.For a child to get into Kindergarten a parent has to shell out money in the range of Rs 50,000 and over. The way things are, i would rather call these educational institutions Financial institutions. They are nothing more then a money making racket with the blessings of the higher powers.
The people who make these educational laws are illiterates themselves and its a shame that these illiterate creatures are given the power to decide for our innocent kids in this modern world we live in.
The syllabus, the degrees, the various courses, whatever the field may be, is all expressed in English and its a total confusion for a childs brain to switch from one medium of language to the other.
I sincerely hope the Voice of the parents will speak out loud and clear and that English will be introduced as the medium of communication at all levels in school.(Keeping Konkani as just one subject for the purpose of posterity) English being an international language , the prospects in terms of career are just unlimited for a child. Where can a child go with Konkani in the long run?. Lets give a serious thought to the last Question.May the voice of the parents be the call to descide the faith of their child and not the illiterate holders of power.

ReplyDeleteDie in Peace Mother Fucker!
English is a universal language and is required if you want to survive anywhere in the world. Everyone' mother tongue is important and should be learnt but not at the cost of restricting ones progress in life. I know of various Goan boys who have studied in Konkani medium schools are kept back in life even though they are in UK, Gulf on the ship etc. because the position available for their growth demands that they speak fluent english.Hence they are stuck in the same position for years.
ReplyDeleteThese policies by our illiterate politicians are picked up from the other states of India. If we look at price of educating our children in Goa is rising by the day and going forward it will be even more difficult. Our education ministers have usually been uneducated bums lacking foresight and knowledge of education policies.
Chorchills son should have studied in balwadi, probably then he would have got a job as a pilot. What is the point of being a pilot and not being able to fly as no one wants to employ. I guess the airlines must be wondering if he will be able to understand the takeoff and landing procedures and be able to converse with the airport tower.
So a my advise to the current uneducated education minister is to stop playing around with other peoples education when your uneducated children are trying to gain education through english medium schools. Let all the schools operating on government grants also be in english.
What has been said before bears repetition here. The medium of instruction should be left to the parents and the financial aid given by government to schools should not be linked to the medium of instruction adopted. The decision to have Konkani as the medium of instruction in the primary classes was against the interests of the students.
ReplyDeleteThe government-recognized unaided private schools with English as the medium of instruction, which have mushroomed, have also given rise to demand for huge donations and charging of hefty fees.
The Directorate of Education is required to approve the fees charged by the private unaided schools but it has been delaying the approval or otherwise of proposed new fee structures, while permitting the schools to charge increased fees when this should be restricted to the old structure till the new proposal is approved. Apparently DoE expects parents to approach the Courts to get it to do its duty.
Many of my friends who studied in konkani and marathi medium schools do struggle with english.we even had debate of how some terms used in science could be translated to konkani and how time consuming and futile such a exercise would be.Most of these people have worked hard and sorted their written and spoken english, but the odd translational english can sometimes be noticed.E.g kutreak bandla tho sodd..in english=leave the dog.
ReplyDeleteI believe english should be the medium of instruction, or the first language, konkani the second language and the third language be a option of hindi, marathi, portuguese, french etc etc.I have nothing against marathi, it is nice to speak marathi but there is a state called Maharashtra whose mother tongue is marathi. It is quite absurd to have two languages of equal status in the same state.Same goes for Hindi, Some people call it the national langauge, i have never understood how they reach this conclusion.India cannot have a national language as it would mean discrimation of all other langauges in the country.
Chorchill's son is a so called Pilot, mind you not a motorcycle pilot but of an aircraft. He must be falling into the cateogery of pilots who are recently exposed in buying false and bogus certificates.
ReplyDeleteLet us expect that his son a pilot and taking instructions from ATC in Konkani, what a disaster???
If Marathi is required as third language then I guess we should also include Malayalam Tamil and Tagalog as in the Gulf that is the second third and fourth language after english. Since many Goans are in the Gulf they will benefit immensely. The uneducated ministers don't know thier arse from their face and are out to form education policies for our children.
ReplyDeleteDont forget Swahili and Arabic. Many of us Goan have lived or still live in these parts.
ReplyDeleteIt is rather strange that a lot of the top Presidents,Ministers have been educated in English Medium schools and many at Convents or Parochial (Church) schools.
Hey Goans, What can we expect from a illiterate Minister who never learnt English grammer and comprehension??? and the previous one with false School certificate and a drop out? What does these people know about education..As they only followed the herds like Cows in wilderness. and will gladly like to turn our childrens in Donkeys.
ReplyDeleteAt this moment of time , Its our BIG MISTAKE to point out fingers to Minister and waste your energies and time bragging about these same old faces in our assemblies with the same old issues.....I ask you Goans ..ACTIONS PLEASE!!!!!!NOW!!!
HOW LONG WILL GOANS WILL VOTE AND ELECT THE SAME SHITTY PEOPLE ... I tell you all we have not much choice either ruling or opposition..either Parrikar or Monserate no complains please!!!...WE HAVE TO GET RID OF THE ENTIRE ROT FROM THE ASSEMBLY .
We must come UNITED as ONE irrespective of our differences to mandate and vote and bring a CLEAN THIRD FRONT GOVERMENT .
As long as DEMOCRACY in INDIA prevails corruption will prevail. The only was for us is to get around this system.. Please do not waste precious time. Its now or never.
Hey stop complaining ..WHOSE FAULT ???GOANS FAULT !!!!THEY LIKE TO WASTE THEIR MONIES ALONG WITH THEIR RIGHTS AND BE SUSSEGAD..THEY TOLERATED THE BRIBE CULTURE AND NOW COMPLAINING....GO ON SAYING """AMKAM KITRAK PODLAM"" GOEM FODDANK VOSOM DIM""" MOJE KHAM NOI TEM...AMKAM GOROZ NAM!!!!
ReplyDeletePlease .SUPPORT GRA for third front goverment Get rid of the 40 theives who are scrathing each other backs to sell Goans backs to outsiders.
Konkani is imposed in Goans to subdue them from good education in ENGLISH MEDIUM so that our Children remain remain imcumbent to the whole wide world ...while MINISTERS LOOT GOA ..Goverment want to IMPOSE KONKANI WITHOUT ANY RECOURSE OR POLICY TO SECURE JOBS FOR GOANS IN PUBLIC or PRIVATE SECTOR...THEY ARE FOOLING GOANS OUTRIGHT
