At the recently concluded Corporation of City of Panjim (CCP), the constituents of the capital city let a golden opportunity to bring about a change go by. A change not in terms of developments, a change not in terms of one man or a party having the last word on what Panjimites need, but a change that would allow them to voice their opinion or suggestion for the betterment of Panjim and its people.
Panjimites would have a say in the administration and functioning thereby bringing about transparency in CCP had they cast their franchise for candidates fielded by socio-political groups like Panajiites Initiative for Change (PINC) and Friends of Good Governance.
It is very evident that the CCP constituents have not voted for individual candidates but either for one man that is Education Minister Babush Monseratte or for the BJP. ‘Know it all’ Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar seems to thought that after exposing large scale corruption of the Congress led government for the last five years he could get majority of his candidates elected to take control of CCP, however he should have realised that people of the state and not only of his constituency still remember that he mentored and nurtured the political career of Taleigao MLA, who has now come to haunt him on his home turf.
The methods used by both the BJP and Babush Monseratte to lure the voters are an open secret and does not need elaboration. However the results of elections have thrown up interesting questions like what is the percentage of gullible voters that can be influenced with cash, goodies or pep talks and even communal brain washing. It is a perception in other parts of the state that cream of the Goan society lives in Panjim, is this section of population also susceptible to such influences, otherwise why was not a single candidate fielded by PINC elected. Of course there is Surendra and Ruth Furtado to whom PINC had extended their support, but Surendra has his own vote bank and this is evident from the fact that he has won PMC or CCP election for five successive terms so it cannot be said that their success is due to PINC.
The only one positive that can be drawn from the CCP elections is the fact that some section of the elite for whom casting their ballot was not a priority at all voted with the intention of keeping Babush Monserrate at bay. This could be credited to PINC whose efforts to drill this aspect into the voters that it is not only a must to keep Education minister away but also to put an end to Vishwajit Rane – Babush Monseratte brand of politics paid off to a certain extent. The strong man of Taleigao was striving with all his money power to capture as many as 27 seats, but was restricted at 16 with two wards of Taleigao also revolting against him.
Goans were expecting a change, especially because of the involvement of Dr. Oscar Rebello through PINC who also managed to get other physicians on board to support candidates fielded by them. Some BJP candidates to whom PINC had extended tacit support have got elected but independent candidates who had the exclusive support of PINC and NCP candidates had to bite the dust.
CCP elections were a closely watched affair as there is an urgent need to change the entire lot of legislators at the next assembly elections. The agenda of the current set of ministers is keep on fattening their personal bank balances and cling on to power so that they can derail any investigation into their disproportionate wealth and assets. Congress MLAs are also not far away, they are happy getting their pie wherever they can and some even get a share of the ministers loot. Electing BJP to power is also not the solution as their first programme would be to fill the party coffers.
Goans were minutely observing the trend whether voters of Panjim would buck the horse and elect socio-political candidates, it is sad that it did not happen however though more the half the strength of CCP are new faces. The only hindrance is that the new faces are affiliated to either Babush or BJP, which means they will be remote controlled and will not have an independent say in the functioning of CCP. The change that we required was elected representatives who could work, think and act independently without the baggage of satisfying political mentors or bosses.
As I was saying earlier the next elections are crucial if we are to save whatever is left of Goa. It is because it is going to be a family affair for most of the ministers. If Ranes and Dhavlikars had started the trend of bringing kith and kin in politics, the coming election will see a horde of ministers bring in their families into political in a bid to augment their bargaining power for lucrative portfolios so that Goa can be sold to the highest bidder and Goans can bled till the last drop of their blood.
Panjimites has throw up a mixed mandate which is not a very healthy trend. This trend still indicates that money plays a major role in winning election and this needs to be controlled or overruled by the thinking class of people who should come together as one force and make their sincere vote count against purchasable vote. For this to happen PINC and Friends of Good Governance should keep the tempo going by addressing the masses throughout Goa using various forums and forms of propoganda.
I am not going to lie, but I was devastated to see the Monster Rat, a man that breeds rapist-children, riding around Panjim like he was ‘Caesar’ and had just won a motorcar race. It was sickening to see his face with his supporters that had just wiped his a_se. I looked at all the traitors that surrounded him or waved at him. They are the crumbeaters and illiterates who cannot think for themselves. I urge Dr Rebello not to give up, but to regroup. They are lessons to be learnt. I have said this before and I know this is a sensitive issue, but I will say it again, money is needed if we are to win. Money is needed to pay for advertising. Money is needed to provide for basic essentials of running a political race, not to buy votes, but to get people acquainted with the person. It is a psychological given that people vote for people that are familiar to them. It was said that Arnold Schwarzenegger, an actor with little education, was elected to governor of California, the third largest economy in the world…..Why? because people knew him from seeing in on the big screen. Some of the independent candidates for the CCP were practically unknown to the electorate. So even if you have all the best intensions it takes street-smart workings to get elected. No doubt the biggest traitor of Goa, the Monster Rat, is working hard so that he can continue to LOOT. Who can afford to give our TVs, washing machines, and refrigerators? Only if you make ‘easy’ money LOOTING you can do it. The fact that you can buy votes with TVs, washing machines etc in India is a clear indication that they is NO ‘democracy; in India. I have said this before, the dirty Indian system of ‘democracy’ will have the Monster Rat, CHORchill elected again and again. They have figured out the system to get them elected. Watch CHORchill will get re-elected if we don't learn from the mistakes of the last CCP elections. We must also accept that some of our people are dirty, not just the politicians but also the electorate, some of whom we may never be able to change. I wonder if these people go to church or temple? In the west, if a person like the Monster Rat had just one charge against him, ie his son being a rapist, his career in politics would be over...not in Goa....We must except that a good size of our people in Goa have no morals. I recall not too long ago that the Swindon Goans invited the Moster Rat to patronize one of their functions. He did not attend, but the fact that a large portion of our people chose this man indicates that large portions of our people are either illiterate or lack morals. We need to find a way to also expose these shameful people and embarrass them.
ReplyDeleteMany a times Golden opportunities flow our way, but its a pity that at these times we fail utterly to recognize these opportunities, in-spite of all the red flags we notice along the way. We repent later, and at times it could be too late to go back to claim it. We had the trump card in our hands and yet we squandered it.
ReplyDeleteMy wish is that with the cards and options left in our hands we still can play a tactful game .All is not lost. We can still make it.
I hope we have recognized our slips ups and go all out to make amends where we failed, as time is short at a disposal.
God Bless our motherland- GOA
It is a real shame that the people of Goa could fall so low in their dignity. They did not vote for the honest and good independent candidates as money played a major role and not only that people know that their illegal work will not be supported by honest candidates as Goans are now habituated to do wrong things and get an easy go through these rogues elected by them and that is why we have an education minister who himself does not have any education. He is a lauging stock in the western world.
ReplyDeleteGoans are become shameless. They showed that by electing the corrupt panel of the rapist Monster Rat. Goans deserve to be thrown out of their houses and made to sleep on the roads. And believe me this day is not far. This is the reason today Goa is under occupation. Our beautiful Goa (IOG) is destroyed because of the greed and self conceit of the Goans. Shame on us!
ReplyDelete@trevor, Joe
ReplyDeleteIOG = Indian Occupied GOA
You are very right we need finance and a strong local party, last time I wrote any one contesting needs more money and support, there were some RATS in this forum who did not agree with me, there was a RAT who wrote I should mind my manners. (names I don't want to mention as it becomes personal)
As also quoted by "Joe" that we Goans will be thrown out on the roads is also very true. "In the name of Road widening many houses were destroyed, in future more will follow. Panjim will have no trees left as MonsterRAT has already given tender to chop it down".
Popular faces helps to win election so do a popular party, but in this election it was presents and favours that led to MonsterRat win.
Special Status is a lie to keep Invader Indians Intact in GOA: What we need is Independence and only Independence is the answer. "Our Government should contact UNO" but which one?
In future Election we should not fight independently with Independent Candidate. We have to form a party to fight corruption. Independent candidates should not be supported as they live in their own world and with their own ideas. "Independent Candidates have no common Goal, a total waste of energy"
After all the show and tell, this is what we get -DISGRACE. - Let's mind our own business- For Goans will never change, We talk about non-goans/ghanthis - I come from a village 95%+ villagers are GOANS, see the civic sense, see the way they drive, and park. And worse in the market square the road is their backyard. last but not the lest the respect for each other - push and shove... GOD help us..
ReplyDeleteAs long as the folck of criminals including crumb eaters are looking for free doles, nothing will change. To change Goa, we do not need force and military. We do not need money and muscle power. All what we need to do is to educate these crumb eaters that it is harmful eating crumbs and living on political lollipops, harmful for the entire Goa and Goans. At these elections, they enjoyed and went home to suffer for the next 5 years. It is the duty of every sincere Goan to spread the word and act at the ballot box in true spirit to get rid of these 40 different diseases plauging Goa.
ReplyDeleteHi Joe... The article Mr Nisser is another replication of many Goans writings the same over and over again and even I did that writing and now got fedup. Now that I know the Mentality of Panjimites which thus reflect the full of Goa its time to catch the last bus to get out of this land and establised ourselves somewhere we can prosper..nothing to complain... or else this proves that outsiders are more than Goans so guys like Monserrate/Churchill and other dynasties can rule rather than serve.
ReplyDeleteLet me narrate a personal experience during election and the after affect. A Cong MLA from North gave money for a religious structure, his condition was that people from the place vote for him. Many people I knew told the MLA that if you want to donate money for the structure please do with charity in mind, not votes.Nevertheless these few who had stood up to the MLA had to resign from the commitee as their vote was not for sale. The MLA won the election, next started the resprisals on the few individuals. In the next election, the people whose votes he had managed to buy earlier did not vote. Apparently the rumour (I could not verify this) was that the MLA checked how many votes he had got in a particular pooling station, using his polling agents deduced the people had turned on him. Next, quietly but cleverly, the reprisals started.
ReplyDeletePeople in most circumstances are forced to accept goodies because if they do not, then you are marked, you take goodies and votes from a particular area are less you are marked, if you dont take goodies you are marked. Therefore in these situations people take goodies and vote for the person who gave the goodies, Mainly because they dont want trouble and not everyone can stand up to the pressure exerted by the elected MLA's.
Hence if there is no solution of the above issue, votes will be bought and sold, dodgy characters will become MLA and MPs. So before calling people gullible and shameless give a thought to this issue. Just because we write here and stand up to the pressure from the goons that does not mean everyone else will. The reality of ground is quiet different from what appears on paper.
@Romulus...I agree somewhat to what you have said, however, it bothers me when you look at the pictures in the news with so many of our Goans rejoicing with the Monster Rat, carrying him on their shoulders and jumping up and down with him. I can understand that they feel pressured to vote for corrupt officials, but why join in the big merriment with the corrupt officials? I fail to see the 'pressure' for them to rejoice with criminals. As to the ‘free gifts’ I have written extensively of my grandmother who lost her husband were early and had to raise so many little children by herself. She ate kunjie and dried fish but she never when begging. In fact you would never have known, she had self-respect, something that is lacking in Goa today. This is the story of our ancestors, which our people have forgotten. I see too many people in Goa are always looking for ‘free’ things. Everyone has to work for their things, why should it be different for the people in Goa?…….This worship of these corrupt politicians has to stop be it in Goa or elsewhere. Let us not forget only last year that the Swindon Goans in London, who are under no 'pressure to vote' for the Monster Rat, advertised with great joy that the this devil was going to be their chief guest for one of their functions. I wish I could print the flyer for you, so that you could see the picture of the devil you see in Holy Pictures, only missing the horns. This was when everyone knew that this man is a criminal selling and looting Goa and also after his son was accused of RAPE of a MINOR. You can't tell me that all the hundreds of Sindon Goans in London were 'pressured' in any way???? We can't keep making excuses for our people!!! As someone just wrote, some of our people are worse than Ghantis. They are much more dangerous than the poor migrant Ghanti………… I know some of Swindon Goans will attack me but the facts are the facts. It is time we take a good look at ourselves in the mirror!......Please undestand this is not a attack on you, but on our people, it is time we take out the log that is in our eyes!
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect Trevor, people joining in the victory celebrations have similar issues described in my comment. A few on may even genuinely support because thats what they are and because they feel powerfull that way. I agree that everyone has to work for their things, in goa everyone gets their work done one way or another, using whatever means possible. So you see our problem is systemic and a grass roots solutions needs to be found because all these habits usually develop at home or when among friends. Most Goan youth usually go to MLA's for donations for any trivial thing ( I did the same when I was a kid as I did not know) without giving a thought to where the money comes and where it goes. MLA and MPs tend to exploit this.
ReplyDeleteNot being rude but, Swindon is about approx 90 miles west of London, so there are goans in Swindon and there are goans in london, there are no swindon goans in london. Swindon Goans have their own game of politics going on there. Usually the advertisements you see in goan newspapers are given by a few individuals who feel powerfull when they associate themselves with MLA and other people. You get to hear the empty boasts in Swindon a few times. Firstly they prefer to have a godfather in Goa. Secondly, these people try to be close to MLA's to get their work done, especially those related to property. You cannot blame all swindon goans for the adverts. So these are inferences from my observations and I dont believe them to be excuses.
You can check my other comments and I have always been saying we need to clean up our act first and then blame others. As you have rightly pointed out, the problem is much closer to home.
Thanks Romulus, for your reply. It is important we debate and try to resolve the issues that divide us so that we all have a better understanding for all. I hope all those, who are so hell-bent on believing we have ‘democracy’ in India, (some on this forum) have read your reply. This is the true story on the ground in Goa. I hope we can continue to debate and brainstorm to come up with solutions to address the weaknesses that hinder us from bringing hope and change to our people in Goa. Look, they said the most powerful country in the world would never elect a black man to the White house. For a country that has a large number of people that are racist, contrary to what is portrayed in the Hollywood movies, I didn't think this was possible. Yet this country, the US, which only a generation ago black were a step above slavery, did elect a black man to the highest office in the world. We need to aim high. But one point must be kept in mind, Barrack Obama, did have some of the richest people supporting him. Not because they are thieves like in Goa, but because they want to see a better world. Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Ophra to name a few all gave enormous sums to see him elected. The money wasn't used to buy refrigerators and tv's but to ADVERTISE, to get their message out. Likewise I see the GRA is going to need the same, to succeed.
ReplyDeleteVery good debate by Romulus and Trevor. The same thing about people in the Middle East. Some feel they are too powerfula nd influential. At the cost of the poor labourers, they invites all these Cheap Guests from Goa for tiatrs and other Goan functions. Can't they spend that amount on our poor boys who suffer in the ME due to harrasment by their sponsors/companies? Those who struggle to eat a square meal because they are not paid by their sponsor or company for months? These so called influentials won't do that because this can not buy them pride in the eyes of the people around but surely, God will notice.
