PANJIM: Transport director Arun Desai has stated before the high court of Bombay at Goa that staff will be deployed to ensure that mining trucks are not overloaded. In an affidavit filed before the court in response to a contempt petition filed by environmentalist Ramesh Gauns against chief secretary Sanjay Srivastava, Desai pointed out that assistant directors have been asked to take up an intensive survey at dispatch points of mineral ore and stock points within their jurisdiction.
Gauns had alleged that the government was not implementing the high court directions to regulate ore transportation.
In the affidavit Desai stated, "Assistant directors have been directed to assess the number of staff that would be required to be present at these points to ensure that no vehicle, carrying (ore) beyond their respective capacity of weight, is allowed to be dispatched. By positioning staff at these points, the menace will be stopped at the source."
Desai also submitted that a notice was issued to mine owners on February 28 to submit a daily report regarding dispatch of every truck at their mines.
The affidavit also mentions that nine assistant directors of transport have been assigned the work of enforcing short term measures and regulations for mineral ore transportation. The department has issued them directions to undertake intensive drives against all trucks fitted with additional wooden planks even on Saturdays and Sundays. Desai assured the court that despite an agitation by truck drivers, strict enforcement will continue
