PANJIM: The tourism department has directed 10 shack owners at Candolim beach by Tuesday to vacate the beach area so as to barricade the beach to facilitate the removal of the River Princess, even as the draft of the contract for removal of the vessel was being vetted by the special legal committee.
As the scrap of the vessel, being a foreign registered ship, was likely to attract the customs duty it was mandatory on the part of the tourism department to designate the area where the cut scrap would be stored, said the tourism director, Mr Swapnil Naik adding that the barricaded area would be designated as customs area.
Mr Naik also informed that the draft contract to be signed with the successful bidder, M/s Arihant Ship Breakers, has been drawn by the former advocate-general, Mr Atmaram Nadkarni, and was being vetted by the legal committee comprising of law secretary and other legal experts.
The tourism director further said the contract was expected to be signed next week and the work on the removal of the vessel would begin soon thereafter. The vessel has been lying grounded for nearly 11 years, after it ran aground in June 2000.
I think a permanent barricade, with the 40 Corrupt MLA`s put around the Goa Legislature an CAMPAL, would be more appropriate and the best structure Goa could have as a Golden Jubilee Celebration.
ReplyDeleteIt would be far cheaper than a bridge from VAsco to Panjim.
Tourism would increase manifold.
