VASCO: Vasco locals have raised concern over constant digging of the roads by the sewerage section of the public works department (PWD) to undertake replacement of the existing underground sewerage line. For instance, the F L Gomes road, opposite to Madina Masjid was dug twice in a year, putting the road users especially the two-wheeler riders to a great deal of hardship.
The concerned contractor took over three months to complete the laying of the sewerage line. On account of this, the vehicular traffic was diverted through the adjacent road causing traffic problems around the vegetable market area. To add to it, the sewerage authorities took up digging along the Vasco tourist hostel road also for the purpose of replacing the sewerage line.
When this reporter contacted the assistant engineer, PWD (sewerage section), Mr Uday Kumar, he said that the sewerage line is around 20-25 years old and in order to prevent overflowing of the sewerage onto the road, the PWD has taken up urgent repairs of the same.
He further disclosed that Vasco city being a low lying area the problem in the sewerage line has occurred over and over again. "The water table is high plus mud is also being excavated along the sewerage line which has slowed down the work", he added.
He also informed that a similar work has been taken up near the Goa Shipyard Ltd and that it would be completed in a short time. He also informed that the sewerage authorities are working towards upgrading the condition of the pumping station for its smooth functioning.
