VILLAGERS OF CHANDEL, PERNEM REFUSES TO ACCEPT COMPENSTION FOR LAND SOUGHT BY GOVT FOR MOPA AIRPORT

PANJIM: Villagers of Chandel in Pernem refused to accept, for the second time, compensation for land sought to be acquired for setting up Mopa international airport.   After the special land acquisition officer M Vast appeared at the panchayat office on Wednesday around 10.30am, the villagers gathered on the premises.
Vast explained that he brought payments towards compensation for land acquired for Mopa airport. However, villagers pointed out to him that they had filed a writ petition before the Bombay high court at Goa, challenging the government decision to acquire the land. The officer, who had a list of persons to be issued cheques, said he would issue payments to only those who were not party to the petition. But villagers pointed out their names in the list and said they were among more than 140-odd petitioners. While the arguments continued, the voices grew louder and the officer withdrew from the scene.
