GOVERNMENT TO SEEK FUNDS FROM CENTRE TO REMOVE RIVER PRINCESS

PANJIM: Even as the Goa State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) decided to award the work of removal of River Princess to M/s Arihant Ship Breakers, which qualified by virtue of being the lowest bidder and technically qualified firm, the government has also decided to approach the Union Home Ministry for seeking financial assistance for the purpose.
Sources in the GSDMA has said that the state would soon write to the Union Home Minister, Mr P Chidambaram asking the Centre to help the state government in the matter.
The successful bidding firm has already accepted the terms and conditions set by the Authority in the bid document. The firm would be told to remove and dump the sand on the beach side, told the sources.
As regards to valuation of the scrap of the vessel, the authorities have sought the help of Metal Scrap Trading Corporation, Mumbai, which has recommended names of six surveyors to carry out the job and quotations have been called for the same and are expected by this week, informed the sources. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat has said that the process for award of the contract to the successful bidder has already begun and that the contract would be signed within 8-10 days (NT)

  1. Charming Goa has run out of money. Our corrupt ministers have siphoned the coffers and have left a big black hole. All these corrupt ministers have enough immoral hafta money to remove the Princess.

  2. So finally the curtain has fallen on our beloved River Princess. We used to keep track of the anniversaries you have spent within the shores of Candolim. The memories will still linger in our minds forever whenever we see across the shores of Candolim, Calangute, Baga. You were a tourist attraction who used to admire you as the future wonder of the world. Bye Bye River Princess Goodbye to you for the years you have spent with us and giving us glimpse of your natural heritage. The owner to whom you serve diligently during your good old days abandoned you unsympathetically leaving you at the hands of the Goan pirates, who wanted to loot and feast at your expenses. Now the owner doesn’t even have to pay for your salvage (final rest) as all the expenses are from the Government ex-chequer. What a pity my dear to have served your unscrupulous owner.

  3. The Goa Government should ask the owner of the vessel Mr. Anil Salgoankar and his company (SMI) who is sitting right in front of their nose in the Assembly to pay for all the expenses including errosion of the beach. Why should the tax payers pay for the sins of businessman.

  4. Franco, do not start singing my dear. You will see the corroded and eroded scrap flushed by the waves onshore in a few years time. All what is going on at present is just being repeated from time to time. Sorry to say that. The Congress government and the BJP or NCP will not make a difference. They all exist together to loot Goa. Anil will have the last laugh.

  5. Thanks Dalia – It was a note on the feeling of despair in the face of obstacles created by our corrupt politicians. A happy note of singing will definitely come sooner or later when we at Niz Goenkar achieve our goals, for which we are striving.
