MEMORIES OF GOLDEN DAYS by Dalia

What are your own memories of your golden days in Goa? Can you summarize? I am sure, you will particularly if you were born 50 years ago. And for the new generation, I beg to look into the history of Goa and know how peace prevailed alongside with total harmony.
I am not making a point to patronize our colonialists or ex-rulers but to simply compare the days then and now. Though we boast of progress and advancement, you will realize how we lost the great image of Goa and Goans. The peace, harmony and tranquility that prevailed is replaced by goondaism, corruption and destruction of Goa. And we talk about advancement, progress and peace in Goa? Still a dream to come true.
After liberation, Goa was slowly adultered by people with criminal records specially the ones those were released from Portuguese jails who came out as freedom fighters. In fact, some of them were locked up for crimes ranging from petty thefts to heinous crimes. Though India earned her independence from the British rule in the year 1947, Goa had remained a Portuguese colony. In the year 1961, erstwhile Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, sent armed forces and under name of ‘Operation Vijay’. This was never our liberation or victory of Niz Goenkars. We are still bonded to our politicians who are plundering Goa in broad day light.
Are we really liberated? Is there an administration that functions? Do we really have freedom? Are our children safe? Do we have safe roads? These are some of the questions we need to ask ourselves that may bother our minds after a deep thought. We may satisfactorily answer yes to convince ourselves to live with the present world. Do we really need a change? Yes, we seek a change and why? Then we need to visualize our previous answer.
Before the Portuguese, there was chaos in Goa. There were different factions and other criminals those were on a rampage. These criminals were taken control of by the Portuguese in their period of rule for over 450 years in Goa. Sooner, peace and harmony regained, prevailed and reigned over Goa. There was complete law and order. Petty crimes committed by small time criminals were counseled and those unruly characters were sent to jails. Those criminals languishing in jails at the time of Liberation suddenly declared themselves as Freedom Fighters, became overnight heroes. Their idea was simple, to eat the doles from the government and continue the trade of creating disharmony amongst the people. These so called liberators wanted Goa then to be a part of Maharashtra. If not Dr. Jack D’ Sequiera, our identity as Goans would have been lost. Today, we are in need of true liberation, we need a change to regain our freedom as Niz Goenkars and live happily as a community. Religion was never an issue with Niz Goenkars until after liberation, people infiltrated into Goa and the ugly issue of religion, caste, etc. showed up. This was fodder for the politicians who banked on these issues and started sugaring people by showing them sympathy. Now we have people classified into different categories, some does not need enough education to obtain jobs. Just like the Goan politicians who, some of them have no basic education and are ministers.
We assume that we live in liberated Goa. Under the present government, we have perfect freedom in democracy to loot and plunder wealth in foreign countries, in burning the country in the name of religion. We have perfect freedom to prove ourselves innocent in daylight murders those witnessed by so many. The common man is crying for justice, the poor man is crying for bread. The helpless people are looking for employment, to feed themselves. We do not want BJP or Congress, UGDP, MGP or NCP but a system that works efficiently like in the Portuguese era that provided everyone a decent, simple square meal. People lived in harmony though education was not widespread. Today, people are searching for social justice and to lead a normal life. Goa was not destroyed by the ex-rulers but by our own people who suddenly woke up from slumber and found a lot of power in their muscles. By those who suddenly became rich through illegal means, nefarious activities, smuggling, looting. A few married older women to see their early death or by getting rid of them, inherited their properties. Some got rid of the actual owners of the shops and properties and grown muscles over them. This was unlike in the olden golden days in Goa. It was not even permitted.
Goa is looted by the present breed of politicians. The more of them are in South with corrupt politicians like Churchill, Alex Sequiera, Joaquim Alemao, Mauvinho Godinho, Digambar, Mickey and atop of them Ravi Naik. In North, the highest bidder of Goa, Monserrates, Narvenkars and the Ranes. Rests of the others are no lesser corrupt.
During BJP rule, the freedom of expression religion was at stake. The same is happening within Congress rule except that they don’t mingle with religion. In olden era, no matter who ruled Goa, the case was different. There was equality, humanity practiced with respect. The best of all was the law and order situation. Churches, temples and other religious places were untouched though doors to these institutions were weaker with a single padlock. Fear of God prevailed, fear of the law was high in the minds of the crooks. In today’s administration, police personnel are involved in selling drugs, the Home Ministers son is involved in drugs trade. Goa is turning into the next Mexico. The International criminals can have a free passage back to their countries. What else do we need to destroy Goa? Prostitution was seldom heard of, there were no massage parlours and of course, peace prevailed along with harmony. In those golden days, we had church, temple and mosque festivals. Now we have so many festivals. Beer festivals, dance festivals filled with drugs, prostitution and crime. The latest addition is the International Filth (a.k.a film) Festival for the rich and the famous to spend tax payers money. The common man cannot afford this so is out but his share of tax goes to foot the bills of the high class delegates those attend these festivals. Our CM and other ministers are busy lighting candles and blessing these festivals. Security, police and everyone engaged to give a class reception to these delegates.
Who cares about the real Niz Goenkars? Who will light the candle for them? Who will make them happy ensuring a good living? Some politicians are even famous with their photographs disbursing cheques to poor souls falling under BPL (below poverty line) as if it is their fathers’ property. It is mere Rs. 1000 pm.
The hope is Niz Goenkar, if only each one of us think and act like NIZ GOENKARS and make a change. Kick the fists of the rouges, illiterate politicians when they offer money to vote. Change, change the change to Niz Goenkar. The memories of Golden days can’t fade and the thoughts grow deeper into my mind. One thought that strikes me- What is the future of our youth? Will they be the victims of these present set of politicians?

  1. At the onset, it's wonderful to see Dalia writing after a long, long time and that too what a thought provoking article. Really brought back some wonderful memories of yester years and along with them, some tears too. It reminded me of the song by Mary Hopkins:
Those were the days my friend
    We thought they'd never end......

  2. This is read to me by my grandson. I have nothing but tears rolling down my eyes. True. Well written Dalia. I always read your comments but this is something else. A long summary of all comments. It really touches my heart, the memories of yester-years. I am really sorry for the present generation. Seen the best but not in the last 40n years. Great job Niz Goenkar, we read and take note of the social uprising created by your paper.

Does any of our Chor Ministers and MLA's including those named in the article read Niz Goenkar? I hope someone in Goa print this out and post to them. I don't think they know how to even log on the web. Will they be able to read what is written by the author? As mentioned, most of them are illiterate. They should take the services of the pigling of Varca to read this article. Very much true, the memories of the past are glorious. Keep it up Niz Goenkara.

Good description and a balanced view. True that Portuguese maintained a high quality of discipline in the law and order situation in Goa as always mentioned by my parents. During the Indian rule, we can only see all the loot and plunder of our wealth. What even the Britishers never looted from India during their long period of time, Indian politicians showed by looting within a period of 50 years of Independence. Goan politicians are not any lesser. They talk about freedom, meaning freedom to loot.

I LIKE THIS PART. GOOD FOR A MIND STIRRING SESSION...........Our CM and other ministers are busy lighting candles and blessing these festivals. 7. I spy elsewhere on net someone say they attained through liberation:"The freedom to speak out against the government, freedom to choose elected
officials, freedom to run for elected office, freedom to petition the government, freedom to agitate and to engage in political activism, freedom to practice one's own lifestyle, freedom to practice one's own religion, freedom
to defend oneself, freedom to fight against injustice, freedom to fight for
    one's cause, etc."
And after 49 years of this so called "Freedom", I would say it is destructive freedom. Goa and Goans are destroyed in front of their own eyes. And such people have the gall to say they got "Freedom".

  8. I am not a Goan but living and working in Goa for many years. I will be settling back to my native place in Nagpur in the next few years. I will not specify further. I just want to make a note here that red tapism in Goa is so much, nothing works without being pushed. This is bad for the growth of economy and I am afraid if this trend continues, Goa will see it's doomsday sooner than thought. Goa should be listed as one of the highly corrupt state of India. The people of Goa are gentle, kind and full of hospitality and these does not include Goan politicians and their henchmen though they are Goans. Unfortunately not the real ones. Many years back, our families comprising of young boys and girls used to sit on the beach after sunset and gaze at the sky and sound of waves. Now, it has become too dangerous even to be in the daylight. Goa is taken over by the mafia. No offence meant to niz Goenkars.

  10. Laloo Prasad has lost badly in the elections, just yesterday. Bring him to Goa and make him settle down. He will not feel the difference between Bihar and Goa. Goa is turning into another Bihar of India. Get rid of Digambar Kamat and his ministry. Why do Goans vote for these same people every term and cry here on the blog?

  11. The yesteryears are all over for us True Goans in Goa . I remember the days from the so called liberation (Invasion) to this date. It is said it came with development in mind, what we have seen so far is Goa being systematically destructed and sold to rich outsiders .High level jobs too are offered to outsiders while many Goans are given low Grade Jobs. Many say corruption is knitted in the lives of Indians , But in our Goa corruption and crime seem to be the birth right of many politicians and government officials. Yet we re-elect the same corrupt ministers, we are our own worst enemies. But all is not lost we need to make that change, wake up from our susagad lives unite and elect new "true Goan" blood.

Jovi Frnandes, Please do not mis-interpret the site.
What you have stated is correct, but, this site is only to help you get your complaint to the top police officer in your State. After that, you have to follow up with all the proofs.
This helps only when the lower cadres of the police play truant, and not otherwise. Kiran Bedi has no powers to solve your actual problems, she just will let the top cop in the State know that someone has a complaint.

  13. Wow! I am no where close to home Dalia and reading this script got my heart beating even harder for our mother land. I must admit that over the many years I have been overseas , its only in the last few months that I have taken keen intrest with deep passion to know about the daily happenings in Goa, through the online news papers and new magazines and I must comment that this blog site has some very passionate writers , to name a few , Menino de Valpoi , Bebdo ( though I would have been more pleased if took credit for his great writings by coming out with his real name) P.Cruz, Niser Dias,N.Fernandes and you Dalia. not forgetting the great coments from good people like Diago Fichardo and the rest(sorry the list is long to name). If people like you led Goa after 1961 , goa would still have its past Glory. Lady Dalia you made good reading material for me today!! Thanks!!

This strikes my chord. The same happens everyday. When will Goa change and who will change? The powerful are getting more powerful. The police are no more the enforcers of law. Goa is going to the dogs. Save it for our generations to come.

Memories of what? My memories of the past have faded though I grew just 55 years by now. My memories are faded not because my brain is growing weaker. Because the memories are erased and replaced by the horrific crimes seen everyday in Goa. The crimes commited by our elected representatives be it at panchayat level or up to Parliament. Goa is eroding in it's value. Look at the Court verdicts on a daily basis. Acquitals for want of evidence. Who is fined and sent to jails are people like poor drivers for accidents or negligent driving. Where are the murderers? Rapists? Looters? Drug Dealers?
They are all free to destroy Goa.

When will Niz Goenkars throw out all these corrupt politicians? When will Niz Goenkar party formed?
My other question: If all those or present politicians die, will the next generation of MLA's be different? Have they not learnt how to make money by looting? Thank you Dalia for the memories of the past.

Goans, you can cry as long as you want. You people can write wonderful articles and post. The real need of the hour is to kill all these politicians with the press of the button - the EVM machine. We need Parrikar but not in BJP.

Why people are praising Portuguese Raj? They should go back to Portugal and stay there if they feel their rule is good. Does anyone know what Portuguese looted from Goa? What did they left for us? Misery? What did they do for the last 450 years of their rule? Did Goans were free to have deucation as it is today? They would not educate anyone as this would have gone against their secret. The planned secret to keep Goans uneducated and live a life of slavery.

My question to Charmaine is: What has the Goa Government done for you and the rest of Goa in the last 50 years of Independence from Portugal.?
I hope you will specify as many good things you feel that Goa has benefitted from, since the Portuguese left.
I will just answer one of your questions....Goans were educated during the Portuguese. Many went to Portugall for higher studies.
You cannot compare what education meant to a person in Goa 50 years ago to now.
Lifestyles 50 years ago are different from what they are now.
Just to help you...computing was not a subject or profession in 1950`s Goa.
Ihave never heard any Goan tell me they were Portuguese slaves or bonded.so I am nit sure where you get your information from.
My Grandparents and forefathers as told to me, were free and in, business, the army, grocers, teachers, ciltivators, train drivers, clerical assistants,Police Inspectors etc. These wre trades more appropriate for that period of itme and history and that is hw education was geared.
Please reply so I /we can understand your concerns or perspective of Portuguese History in Goa.

  23. @ N Fernandes I doubt Charmine D'Costa is the true name. It is in imposter, to date no such person with that name has entered Australia legally, that cannot put a sentence together.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Charmine... I assume that you have emigrated to Australia out of our own free will. Now that probably you are an Aussie, let me enlighten you to the atrocities committed by the early settlers in your island nation. The process of British colonisation 1791 when George Vancouver claimed the Albany region in the name of King George III.From 1788 until 1823, the Colony of New South Wales was a penal colony.
The settlers were mostly convicts and whites and they destroyed the aboriginal culture, faith and customs.
On the other hand, By the end of the 16th century, Goa had already reached its peak and was referred to as "Golden Goa" or Goa Dourada and Rome of the East.
There were Goan administrators in Goa and not Portuguese.
Even in the 21st century, Australia is a racist country and hardly have any Aborigens as administrators and ministers.
What is happening right now is Goa is akin to what happened to the Aboriginals of Australia when the Settlers first came to their land.
Now the Ghanttis are flocking to Goa and settling down and driving the Goans out of their homes.
Probably, you too are one of their casualty.

Charmine D'Costa is living in a world where the dolts like Naguesh Karmali, Pai Vernekar, Subhash Velingkar live. Do not imitate these idiots or try to pacify these donkeys. These are the thieves who have changed history by adding and deleting what they like and don't like. Learn the real history and then come and talk. The Portuguese never harrassed the good Goans but the evildoers like Karmali, Pai Vernekar etc. They never made Goans slaves.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think this Charmine is just another figurative of the Karmali’s dynasty, he is another wolf in sheep’s clothing. In earlier days my mother learnt ELEMENTARY PORTUGUESE (Segue that’s what she could learn) thought by the priest in a very remote area of a village free of cost and now she can fluently read and write konkani in roman script. They were also given milk, porridge, biscuits etc., with no additional cost to anybody. All this food products were supplied to the churches all over Goa free of cost. They were encouraged to learn more and more any never to be ignorant. This is the style and legacy the Portuguese have implanted in the minds of the people in Goa during their regime with sound principles to be kept in the minds of the people for generations to come. And see now the condition of the Goa State, no free education for our children, if food is provided our children have to be hospitalized because of food poisoning etc. etc. and the story is endless. I do not know from which part of Goa this Charmine came. May be his parents were hiding in the part of Karwar or other neighbouring states, where they were jeolelous of our State getting prosperous.

You be the soldier there and if you win I am ready along with all niz goenkar to congratulate you. We will also garland you and give you a solid welcome in our beautiful Goa. Please let us know what Portuguese looted from Goa. Particularly from your family and ancestry. Let me tell you I am neither a Portuguese or an Indian. I am a Goan and we want our homeland back. Please take the Indians to Australia if you love them.

  29. I am reminded of the famous speech of Marthin Luther king; I have a dream...That is precisely the dream of every NIZ GOENKAR,wether in GOA,MUMBAI,OR ANY PART OF THE WORLD.WE NIZ GOENKARS HAVE DREAM OF A BETTER GOA,WE need a peaceful and harmonius goa, where muslims, hindus, catholics, buddhists, sikhs, jains live in peace and harmanony.Goa of the past is a peaceful GOA.Today it is not,CHARMAINE open your eyes and see whats happening in goa, read about goa, uptodate your present knowledge on GOA,its only then your heart will change and dream of a better goa, a goa of the past, a goa that is tranquil and peaceful and loving, welcoming,a home sweet home.HOW CAN YOU TELL A FROG WHO LIVES IN THE WELL, THERE EXIST AN OCEAN OF WATER, CAN THE FROG COMPREHEND WHAT AN OCEAN IS? SO IS THE PEACE AND TRANQUILITY OF GOA AN OCEAN LOST FOREVER....BUT NOT FOR EVERY TRUE NIZ GOENKAR,THEY HAVE A DREAM, SOME DAY THAT DREAM WILL COME TRUE , GOD BLESS EVERY NIZ GOENKAR AT HEART. Charmine D'Costa spoke out her heart and there is no harm in doing that. This is an open blog for all to express views. She may be wrong at some part. I am young and not qualified to comment much except reading history that says so. We, Goans have to admit that the Portuguese commited some atrocities against Goans particularly the weaker sections. The only benefeciaries of Portuguese rule in Goa were the Christian Bammons or Catholic Brahmins.

FOR IN CHRIST ALL ARE ONE.CAN ANY BAMMON IN GOA THROW A STONE AT ME FOR NOT BEING A BAMMON .DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE IN CHRIST BEING A BAMON OR SUDRA ,A SLAVE OR A SERVANT?lets not get involved in caste system.WE are goans and goans we are, thats the truth. I don't know your age of now but if you are from the present generation, I am sure, your parents will explain it better.
