3 YRS RIGOROUS IMPRISONMENT FOR ATTEMPTING TO KILL PSI

MARGAO: The additional sessions court here on Wednesday sentenced one Santosh Naik to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three years and to pay a fine of Rs 8,000 for attempting to commit the murder of police sub-inspector Prasanna Bhagat by stabbing him with a knife.
 According to the prosecution, on the night of February 28 this year, the accused had stabbed Bhagat when he had visited Naik's house to investigate an assault case reported at Bali. Naik was named as an accused in the case registered at the Cuncolim police station.
The accused caused grievous injuries to Bhagat by stabbing him in his abdomen. Subsequently, the accused had escaped and surrendered to the police one month after the incident, the prosecution said.  The police had filed a chargesheet under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code for attempt to commit murder.  The additional sessions court had recently held Naik guilty and pronounced the sentence on Wednesday. The court has directed that Rs 5,000 from the fine amount be paid to the victim. (TNN)
