WHY BOW TO FREEDOM FIGHTERS by Dr. Flora Miranda, Panjim

Dr. Flora Miranda, Panjim, Ex-Professor and Head of Skin Dept. GMC (Received by email)
I read with concern the letters to a local newspaper written by Marcos Alemao, Nelson Lopes, Adelmo Fernandes (8th November) and Dr. Francisco Colaco (11th November). I am shocked that our State Government is going to bow down to the demands of the so-called freedom fighters like Naguesh Karmali and Flaviano Dias.
Also, I am concerned that from December 19, all the sign boards in Goa, will be in Devnagari Konkani script and Marathi. People of older generation like me will find it tough to read the boards. This is not acceptable. Moreover, Goa is an international tourist destination English should be retained for sign boards.
The Government should not listen to foolish suggestions of these so-called freedom fighters who seem incapable of doing any meaningful work. Karmali and F. Dias should concentrate their efforts on issues that plague Goa like mounting garbage problem, corruption everywhere, water shortage, electricity shortage and other issues that plague Goa.
Real freedom fighters in India never claimed any pension and I expect Karmali and others to give up their pension, if they have other means to meet their needs. In future they should desist from making foolish suggestions to the Government. The Chief Minister must make not bow down to the wishes of the likes of Naguesh Karmali and others.

  1. I guess our CM will now press Maharashtra to have signs in Konkani in par with Marati. Where is the freedom when the ministers and their henchmen are terrorising innocent Goans? Those that do not sell their lands to builders are threatened with dire consequences. These so called freedom fighters are politicians chamchas.

  2. Dear Dr Flora
Welcome to Niz Goenkar. The formation of the states in India were on the basis on language.Maharashtra was formed on the basis that Marathi is the widely spoken language there. There are other languages too spoken in Maharashtra, such as urdu, Konkani (the entire Konkan coast of Maharashtra speaks Konkani) and Gujarati. But the government of Maharashtra does not recognise these languages. So why is our Goa government recognising Marathi when Goa is the land of Konkani?

  3. It is great to see this site and am surprised how these Niz Goenkar are fighting for a freedom from the corrupt politicians. Yes I have visited the Portuguese Naval ship and was glad to see such a good and warm welcome to the the Goans. The CM and Governor are two fools who missed the opportunity and did not behave in a diplomatic manner. You do not call such monkeys diplomats or high officials who are afraid of a few thugs like BJP.

To Dr. Flora Miranda:::I fully agree with all the points you have made in your comment.
Freedom Fighters think they have done a great favour to Goans of all creeds,Hindus,Christian,Muslims.
However the ground reality is,they have all raped Goa for their personal benefit.
Instead of retiring gracefully and thankfully for the (in some cases) undeserved Pension they receive..in retropsect, they continue to stir up old "SHIT" to keep themselves in the news.
There is a new "World Order"...but these guys are stuck in their own Old World order.
I do not think they understand the word Globalisation.I doubt they ever will either.
I do not think Indians from other major Language states will approve of this.It defragments a country....not unite it.
Hopefully these Freedom Fighters will now realise why the were colonised in the first place. It certainly wasn`t, because they were unified as one Country called India.

  5. what right does Karmali and his gang have to call themselves freedom fighters? They did a job a wrong job and were paid for it and are still paid for it inspite they are no longer doing the job again. No one has done it free of charge. They have taken money and are still taking money for that. Karmali should stop his bragging that he is a freedom fighter and he fought for freedom when the truth is he did it for money, a wrong act for money.

  6. The present government is not people friendly and not for our development but for their own. Doing petty things like Shiv Sena did in Bombay by changing names, they only got political mileage and nothing else. We may condemn Shiv Sena dn BJP but what about the Congress government in Goa? Do we still prefer to be ruled by these thugs who are mostly Ex-BJP or we need new heads to run Goa? Each one of us has got the answer that shouod be delivered at the next elections.

  7. Goa being a tourist destination, it is necessary to have the sign boards and the boards on the buses in English for the convenience of everybody! Have you not experienced the inconvenience caused when you go to Tamilnadu or other South Indian States where the boards on the buses and the road sign boards are all in the local languages i.e. in Tamil/Telgu/Kannada script which other find very difficult to read?

  8. This Karmali gang act like the Nazi movement of Germany before the second world war. He has so much time on his hands because he gets 'easy money' eating dole at our expense. The Portuguese are part of our heritage whether we like it or not. How rude can someone be to their guests regardless what we feel about them?.....this is not Goan at all! These people are not Goan, they way they behave and should be kicked out of Goa. If he and the so-called freedom fighters care about Goa why are they quiet when Goa is being raped by indiscriminate mining, garbage, corruption, concrete jungles etc? Why are they not joining the fight with the GBA? They people are useless, eating 'free' money....welfare bogus bigots at our expense. Oh, and I forgot they are the 'true' and 'pure' blood... Send them to Delhi where they belong. Goa has been destroyed in 50 years, not even the Portuguese could do in 500 years!!!!!! I urge normal people to stand up to these people or they will end up taking Goa down the wrong path. Please stand up and not allow these people to be the voice of the Goan people.
