FIGHT WITH A WIFE LEADS TO HUSBANDS SUICIDE

PANJIM: A 25-year-old man committed suicide by stabbing himself with a knife in the stomach at Calangute on Saturday evening, as his wife refused to give him money to purchase liquor.
Sanjeev Mukdam, an alcoholic used to have frequent quarrels with his wife and he even assaulted her when she refused to give him money to purchase liquor, police said. Mukdam, from Belgaum in Karnataka, works as a labourer in Goa and had married last year. They stayed in a rented room in Assagao.
On Friday morning he fought with his wife. He told her that he want money to buy alcohol and was not bothered how she earned it. "This upset the wife and she left home and went to stay at her aunt's house in Calangute," said police sources.
Police said that the wife informed them that he had taken a huge debt which he could not repay due to his drinking habit. "Whatever money they earned, he spend on alcohol," the police said. When Mukdam realized that his wife had gone to her aunt's house, he went to meet her there at about 7.30 pm.
"Mukdam came drunk to meet his wife and threatened her. He was continuously asking for money and even tried to assault her. He verbally abused her in Kannada. This upset his wife and she pushed him outside the house and closed the main entrance of the house. This upset the husband and he demanded that she immediately open the door. But when she didn't listen to him, he threatened to kill himself. "But the wife was too scared and hurt. As she didn't open the door, he stabbed himself with the knife he was carrying -first in the stomach and then he slashed his throat. Around the same time, his wife's aunt reached the spot and she tried to snatch the knife from his hand, but he had collapsed", police said.
Though the incident happened at about 7.30 pm, the Calangute police were only informed at 11.30 pm. Due to this the police got suspicious and police team led by DySP P L Mapari visited the spot.
"Neighbours told the police that they were witnesses in the case and they had heard the arguments between the husband and wife and even seen how in a rage, under the influence of alcohol, Mukdam killed himself," added police sources.
When contacted, DySP Mapari said, "We have questioned the wife and neighbours who confirmed that Mukdam killed himself. After preliminary inquiry, we have registered it as a case of unnatural death and sent the body for postmortem to Goa Medical College and hospital, Bambolim." (TNN)
