SCRAP FREEDOM FIGHTERS PENSION, 50 YEARS IS ENOUGH by Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão

I am putting forth here many of the benefits Goa and Goans have had prior to the year 1961 and the contrast that Goa and Goans are facing post 1961. It is for the knowledge of those Goans who were either born post 1961 or were too small to comprehend things.
  1.  There was no Income taxed in Goa, so your earnings were all for yourself.
  2. There was no Land acquisition and if Government needed, it was bought at market rate.
  3. Goans were employed in all government departments, barring a handful of top posts which were manned by the Portuguese.
  4. There were parochial schools free of charge in many villages, there were English schools run by priests and nuns, most of which still stand today. There were facilities for further studies in Lisbon. The Medical College at Panjim was the first one in Asia.
  5. There was strict discipline, and any infringement of the law you were in prison (mind you the police personnel were Goans.); you could sleep at nights with windows open, you could leave your house open and go out for some time, your garden fruits or plantation would not be robbed; Goa was secure. There were rare cases of robberies and murders. I recollect a Goan surgeon’s license was cancelled for life for operating under influence of alcohol and resulting in removal of kidney instead of appendicectomy.
  6. There was a dress code when entering cities, one had to wear a shirt, (no roaming bare chest like the foreign tourists or ghantis of today); no spitting, no pan, no blowing your orifices in public. The cities were therefore clean.
  7. There was no slavery except for the few negro slaves that were always with the colonial rulers/explorers like the British, Spanish, Portuguese, etc., who were workers on the ships, and some of whom were kept employed in Goa on land. A majority of these slaves are in the US. That is how negroes landed in the US. And here in Goa too a few who in later years became the butt of jokes named “Humpree Agustin”.
  8. There were no deaths in police custody.
  9. There was sufficient food for all as agricultural land was fully utilised. Farming too was economical as there was no theft of farm animals and birds.
The Portuguese did not loot Goa and siphon the riches to Portugal. Even the mortgaged gold and money from ‘Banco National Ultramarino’ were returned to Goa. I wonder what happened to the unclaimed gold? And I remember that on 18th December 1961, the Portuguese military told the neighbouring Goans to take away whatever they wanted from their barracks so that it does not fall into the hands of the Indians. Such was their affection towards Goans. And when Indian Military entered Goa on the 19th December, they found the barracks ransacked & empty, which infuriated them; and a military Order was passed that houses would be searched and people would be jailed. There were also rumours that the Indian military officers served food in “bispotes” which people hadn’t taken.
With all this, was there any reason for anyone to be discontent? Or was it just ideology, that this land is mine and who are these outsiders to govern?
What is happening today is exactly the opposite of the above. People should realise that they are being openly looted from every side. Human rights violation in all forms is prevailing. Many people are jailed on false complaints, a threat police themselves give. People are deprived of fresh air to breath in mining areas; citizens are killed almost every day on the roads and by reckless mining trucks. People are deprived of fresh and clean drinking water and unadulterated food to eat. With commercial hospitals sprouting in Goa another novel human rights violation is taking place. Patients stepping into them are falsely diagnosed as very serious and secluded in ICUs, family terrorised and money extorted, unnecessary angioplasties and coronary by-pass are performed.
Goa government is now preparing to celebrate 50 years of “Liberation”. We right minded people of Goa demand first to scrap the pension and other facilities like reservations in professional colleges, jobs, etc. given to the so called freedom fighters at the taxpayer’s expense. They are no longer underprivileged, 50 years of dole is more than sufficient.

  1. This pension of the so called freedom fighter should be scrapped right away and save the tax payers money which are distributed to these good for nothing thieves who call themselves freedom fighters with their leader Naguesh Karmali.

  2. Well said Dotor. Goan so called freedom fighters are milking Goa for their pension till the blood start coming. They have no conscience. Time to fight for liberation from these freedom fighters.

  3. i appreciate the viewpoint and a lot of good things that used to happen in Goa prior to 1961. However, having said that, i'm pretty sure that this is only one side of the coin. It would only be judgemental to provide half the information. As a journalist, it would only be fair on your part to tell both sides of the story.

  4. Yes enough is enough. The fake freedom fighters have looted enough the government treasury which contained the hard earned money of the Goans in the form of tax. Stop paying them at once. @Namu - there is no other side to this coin. The fact is real and there is nothing opposite to it. The false propaganda is spread by these rascals known as freedom fighters who were common thieves in Portuguese jails. Whole history has been manipulated by them to make their ends meed. The scum bags.

  5. A well written review of those olden, golden days for the new generation. An eye opener to the so called Freedom Fighters. These so called FF should hang their head in shame after reading the proof written by Dr.Falcao. We would have been better off under Portuguese rule rather than under the adminstration of these 40 Chors headed by a dumb and deaf Cowmuth.

  6. What are we freed from? In fact we are taken out of our peaceful and safe environment and fed to the greedy, corrupt and criminal vultures.

Namu, If you know there is the other side of the coin, why do you not present it? If you do not know, from where do you get this idea of "other side of the coin"? Are you one of those receiving pension?

Hi Namu:::I appreciate your view and concern of prsenting both sides of the coin.Thats fair. But, I agree with Anonymous VIII...if anyone knows the other side to keep us informed.
To be truthful Namu...99% of al Goans of all religions do not have anything favourable to say about an elemet of FF`s.This is not a Niz Goenkar issue. If you read other Newspaper comments and blogs you will understand me.
The real FF`s live in quiet dignity and are thankful for the Pension.
However there are a few fake ones too, that jumped on the Pension bandwagon. The Goa Gove GRAVY TRAIN
Karmali seems like one such fake.He gives out the impression that he is a FF so he can keep on justifying his pension. This is because of his guilt in receiving one for just shouting.
It has been 50 years since the Portuguese have left India / Goa...but this so called FF monkey keeps making his jungle noises. Why and what the benefit? And for whom?
Portugal has changed from a Dictatorship to a Democracy. It is now part of a larger Europe (European Union) and NATO.
Portugal has developed at a far higher rate that Goa has.
The standard of life /Judiciary/Policing/Social services /Tourism are far more superior and of a higher standard to what Goa has acheived in 50 years.
It may not be fair to blame the Indian Central Government(New Delhi). But for sure we must blame the inept,uneducated,corrupt,self-serving Goan Politicians...all 40 of them for the total mess in Goa today.
I will not be surprised if 70% of Goa`s wealth earned,is in the hands of Politicians, their families, and their ancillary businesses`.
Many Politicians have sent huge amounts of money to avoid Tax to the USA and Switzerland and also lesser known Tax Havens like Luxenburg,Leichien stein,Dubai,Bharain,Cayman Islands etc.
The FF`s should come out strongly against such mis management of Goa....instead they choose to bark at the Portuguese.
I do not think the Portuguese give a FU--ING "shit" to these FF`s anymore.
Goa is also now overcrowded. There has been no controls in place to prevent this.
Goa`s infrastructure cannot sustain such unchecked migration.Migrants do not practice controlled births. They are growing at a much faster pace than Rat & Mice colonies.
I guess in the end we will all have to live with many shanty towns,Nagars, slums courtesy of what the FF`s fought for.Along with this all the crime & filth.
The Portuguese have long gone...the new Rulers are the Migrants.
If I were you I would watch your back yard or neighbourhood.
But I also wish you, Gods peace.

  9. yes 50 years of invasion goa has truly lost its identity.yes most of the govt jobs in Goa were manned by goans.even the military jobs were held by goans.my father served in the portuguese military.as a goan he was arrested in 1961 after the invasao.he was only protecting his Goa from indian invaders.Goa was so so beautiful in the 50s .so peaceful.
