PANJIM: The police have provided security to special judicial magistrate (SJM) Maria Mascarenhas-who recorded crime branch constable Chandru Gawas' dying declaration-after she complained to director general of police (DGP) Aditya Arya that she was "threatened" by a person on behalf of crime branch PI Pravinkumar Vast and his goondas.
"Two police personnel will be providing security to the SJM. Also, our robot vehicles are constantly patrolling around the SJM's house," said DySP Deu Banavlikar. The SJM had alleged that "one unknown person came to my residence at Merces on June 28 at 10.45pm and threatened me, asking me to change the statement of Gawas on behalf of your officer by the name of PI Vast". Mascarenhas had recorded Gawas' statement in the presence of two witnesses last Sunday.
Later, when the Panjim police had requested her for the statement's copy, she had refused to give it, stating that the constable had specifically asked that it shouldn't be shared with the "police". In her letter to the DGP, Mascarenhas said that the person who came to her residence asked her to call PI Vast on his cellphone. "He promptly told me that I have to change the statement and that if I did not, a crime would be registered against him," the SJM alleged in the complaint. Mascarenhas admitted that she didn't ask for the identity of the person who visited her, but demanded that the police take action against the person. The Old Goa police have registered a non-cognizable offence against an unknown person.
