VASCO: Chief minister Digambar Kamat on Tuesday asked Mormugao deputy collector Levinson Martins to prepare a report which would protect houses from demolition along National Highway 17-B from Ravindra Bhavan to Sada.
The chief minister accompanied by other ministers, politicians and officials inspected the area of the proposed highway extension project for over two hours, covering the area from Ravindra Bhavan, Baina to Sada junction and then berths 1 to 9 at Mormugao port.
Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar said MPT was asked to build a flyover from Ravindra Bhavan to berth no. 9 as that this would not necessitate extension of the highway and would in turn not lead to demolition of houses in Desterro and Sada. Local MLA Milind Naik also supported the suggestion that a flyover is the solution to the problem.
Desterro Fishermen's Association president Antonio Monteiro said if the government went ahead with the highway extension by demolishing houses, it would be the worst thing to happen after the Khariawadda demolition issue.
Parrikar also said he would take up the issue if the government decided to complete the project by demolishing people's houses.
