MARGAO: The principal district and sessions judge, Bimba Thali, on Friday rejected the anticipatory bail application filed by Urmila Salgaonkar, the president of Saraswati Mahila Mandal, a self-help group (SHG). The court held that several students were affected due to the food supplied by the group to Murgao High School at Sada, Mormugao, this month.
The court observed that the applicant is not entitled for the pre-arrest bail and gave the opportunity to the police to carry out investigations and get to the root of the matter.
During the hearing of the case, special public prosecutor Subhash Dessai had argued that the antecedents of a person are to be considered by the court while deciding the anticipatory bail application. He said that the applicant was also facing a similar case of poisoning of midday meals supplied to another school.
The court also upheld the argument of the prosecution that custodial interrogation of the accused was required to find out the reason behind the repeated incidents of poisoning of food supplied under midday meal scheme. It may be recalled that 35 students from the Murgao High School were admitted to the cottage hospital at Chicalim due to the poisoning. – TNN
